A thermodynamic constitutive model for shape memory polymers based on phase transition

Yiheng Xue et al.

Summary: Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are soft smart materials that can recover their original shape from a pre-deformed shape under different external stimuli. However, existing constitutive models fail to accurately describe the shape memory effect (SME) of SMPs under large and complex deformation. In this study, a new constitutive model based on thermodynamics and phase transition is proposed to describe the SME of thermal-induced SMPs. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model and provide insights for further research on SMPs.

Epoxy-based shape memory composite for space applications

Debby Margoy et al.

Summary: Shape memory polymers have the ability to recover their permanent shape and are suitable for deployable devices in spacecraft. However, the impact of vacuum environment on their deployment has not been thoroughly studied. This work introduces a method to improve energetic efficiency and a motion sensing technique for shape memory polymer actuators.

Shape memory behavior of unidirectional pultruded laminate

Roman Korotkov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shape memory behavior of epoxy-based pultruded flat laminates reinforced with unidirectional glass fibers, showing the shape fixity and shape recovery ratios for different fiber orientations. The study also analyzed the performance of pultruded composite materials and laid the foundation for further studies on the simulation and optimization of pultrusion processes.

Thermo-mechanical modeling of viscoelastic crystallizable shape memory polymers

Aayush Prasad et al.

Summary: Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are soft active materials that can retain temporary shapes and deform in response to stimuli. This paper focuses on a subclass of thermally activated SMPs, discussing their behavior and the effects of parameters such as temperature and crystallinity on nonlinear deformation and shape memory. The study shows how these parameters influence the complex thermo-mechanical behavior of SMPs.

A 3D finite strain viscoelastic model with uncoupled structural and stress relaxations for shape memory polymers

Yingyu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 3D finite strain viscoelastic model to characterize the thermomechanical behaviors of amorphous shape memory polymers, with uncoupled structural and stress relaxations. The temperature- and rate-dependent viscoelastic behaviors and stress relaxation are described using molecular mechanism models. The model accuracy is further improved by introducing a modified weight function similar to frozen fraction in phase transition theory. The developed model shows good consistency with experimental data in simulating shape recovery experiments of amorphous SMPs under different conditions.
