Quantifying the optimal thickness in polymer:fullerene solar cells from the analysis of charge transport dynamics and photoabsorption

Shaoxian Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a semi-empirical model is proposed for quantifying the optimal thickness of the photoactive layer in organic solar cells. The model considers factors such as charge carrier transport, space charge accumulation, and photoabsorption. Validation using widely studied polymer:fullerene solar cells shows good consistency with experimental values. Additionally, the model provides insight into charge relaxation dynamics.

Power-Dependent Photoluminescence Efficiency in Manganese-Doped 2D Hybrid Perovskite Nanoplatelets

Seung Kyun Ha et al.

Summary: Substitutional metal doping is a powerful strategy for manipulating the emission spectra and excited state dynamics of semiconductor nanomaterials. The synthesis of colloidal manganese (Mn2+)-doped organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanoplatelets via a ligand-assisted reprecipitation method introduces bright and long-lived midgap Mn2+ atomic states, with dual emission from the band edge and the dopant state. The interaction of mobile band edge excitons with localized dopant sites in 2D semiconductors is analyzed, providing fundamental insight and expanding the toolbox for manipulating light emission in perovskite nanomaterials.

The Intrinsic Role of Molecular Mass and Polydispersity Index in High-Performance Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Mumin Shi et al.

Summary: The degree of polymerization significantly affects the microstructure and performance of non-fullerene polymer solar cells, while the diverse stability issues pose a challenge for evaluating material application potential. Systematically studying the effects of polymerization degree on efficiency and stability, along with finding a balance between the efficiency-stability gap, can guide material design and evaluation more effectively.

Synergistic Effect of Dielectric Property and Energy Transfer on Charge Separation in Non-Fullerene-Based Solar Cells

Pandeng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified approach was developed to estimate the dielectric constants of PM6 donor and non-fullerene acceptors, revealing higher dielectric constants in most non-fullerene acceptors and blend films, along with significant differences in dielectric constants at optical frequencies. These results are likely associated with reduced exciton binding energy and bimolecular recombination. Furthermore, the overlap between the emission spectrum of the donor and absorption spectrum of the non-fullerene acceptors facilitates energy transfer and efficient charge separation, suggesting a synergistic effect contributing to the physical working mechanism in non-fullerene-based photovoltaic devices.

Mobility Relaxation of Holes and Electrons in Polymer:Fullerene and Polymer : Non-Fullerene Acceptor Solar Cells

Fumiya Hamada et al.

Summary: The study found that the PBDB-T: ITIC blend has faster electron and hole mobility compared to PBDB-T: PCBM, while the mobility in PBDB-T: Y6 is moderate. Additionally, the relaxation of electrons in PBDB-T: Y6 is slower compared to holes, which aligns with the preferred normal device structure.

Non-fullerene acceptors with branched side chains and improved molecular packing to exceed 18% efficiency in organic solar cells

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The molecular design of acceptor and donor molecules has significantly advanced organic photovoltaics. By introducing branched alkyl chains in non-fullerene acceptors, favorable morphology in the active layer can be achieved, leading to a certified device efficiency of 17.9%. This modification can completely alter the molecular packing behavior of non-fullerene acceptors, resulting in improved structural order and charge transport in thin films.

Efficient Hole Transfer via Delocalized Excited State in Small Molecular Acceptor: A Comparative Study on Photodynamics of PM6:Y6 and PM6:ITIC Organic Photovoltaic Blends

Shuyan Liang et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on small molecular acceptors (SMAs) have achieved significant progress, with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 16% due to novel material design and advances in device preparation technology. This study compared the performance of two bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic devices containing different SMAs, finding that the PM6:Y6 blend had a higher efficiency than the PM6:ITIC blend, demonstrating the importance of proper molecular design strategy and beneficial film morphology in facilitating charge generation in OSCs using SMAs.
