A facile strategy for preparation of strong tough poly(lactic acid) foam with a unique microfibrillated bimodal micro/nano cellular structure

Pei Xiang et al.

Summary: This study reports the design and fabrication of strong tough poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foam using pressure-induced-flow (PIF) processing and supercritical CO2 foaming. The combination of PIF processing and supercritical CO2 foaming allows for the production of PLA foam with a unique microfibrillated bimodal micro/nano cellular structure. The properties of the PLA foam are strongly affected by the saturation temperature.

ScCO2-assisted fabrication and compressive property of poly (lactic acid) foam reinforced by in-situ polytetrafluoroethylene fibrils

Xinyi Wei et al.

Summary: Bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foam is an effective alternative to petrochemical-based polymers for reducing environmental pollution. However, PLA foaming process faces challenges due to poor melt strength and crystallization properties. This study incorporated a small amount of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) into the PLA matrix and successfully enhanced the properties of PLA foam, including storage modulus, crystallinity, and compression strength. The findings provide a potential strategy to develop bioderived and biodegradable polymer foams with controllable pore structures and high compression properties.

Fabrication of low-density poly(lactic acid) microcellular foam by self-assembly crystallization nucleating agent

Yujing Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, branched PLLA was obtained by mixing linear PLLA with a chain extender, and the crystallization properties were further modified by adding self-assembled nucleating agent. The results showed that TMC-300 was an effective nucleating agent for branched PLLA, and its self-assembled fibers provided numerous nucleation sites for improved crystallinity. An appropriate content of TMC-300 could be self-assembled into a fiber network framework to regulate the crystallization behavior of branched PLLA and increase storage modulus. This study is important for low-density microcellular foaming and the preparation of high-quality microcellular foams.

Fabrication of highly efficient phenylphosphorylated chitosan bio-based flame retardants for flammable PLA biomaterial

Xiaobing Ma et al.

Summary: Modified chitosan-based flame retardants, such as phenylphosphorylated CS (PhPCS) and phenylphosphoramidated CS (PhPNCS), show promising prospects due to their sustainability, biodegradability, and good charring properties. These bio-based flame retardants exhibited excellent flame retardancy efficiency for poly(lactic acid) (PLA), but the mechanical properties of PhPCS-based biocomposites decreased with increasing content. On the other hand, PhPNCS-based biocomposites showed improved mechanical strengths due to the reactive compatibilization between the PhPNCS nanoparticles and PLA matrix.

Jinwei Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of supercritical carbon dioxide on the formation of crystalline domains and foaming behaviors of PLA with different D-isomer content at various foaming temperatures. Results showed that both crystallinity and crystalline morphology played a crucial role in cellular structure. The presence of ring-banded spherulites led to uniform and closed cellular structure in PLA foams.

Effect of Molecular Chain Mobility Induced by High-Pressure CO2 on Crystallization Memory Behavior of Poly(D-lactic Acid)

Shaojie Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the crystallization behavior induced by the crystallization memory effect of poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) under CO2. The results show that CO2 decreases the difference in nucleation kinetics between PLA under atmosphere and CO2, and increases the secondary nucleation constant. CO2 affects crystallization morphology by activating molecular chain mobility and preventing branching of the original central spherulite, leading to the formation of more perfect crystals.

Effect of poly(lactic acid) crystallization on its mechanical and heat resistance performances

Bomou Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between crystal structure and thermal, mechanical performance of PLA by preparing specimens fully crystallized at different temperatures. It was found that crystallization effectively enhances heat resistance but excessive temperature can lead to aggregation of crystalline and amorphous regions, resulting in decreased mechanical performance. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to reveal the mechanism behind this relationship.
