One-Pot Synthesis of Heteroatom-Bridged Cyclic Diaryliodonium Salts

Mattis Damrath et al.

Summary: Two simple methods for synthesizing O- and N-bridged diaryliodonium triflates are described. Different derivatizations were applied to demonstrate their usefulness as building blocks and to gain a deeper understanding of their general reactivity.

A Bidentate Iodine(III)-Based Halogen-Bond Donor as a Powerful Organocatalyst

Flemming Heinen et al.

Summary: This study presents the first application of a bidentate bis(iodolium) salt as an organocatalyst in various reactions, surpassing the performance of iodine(I)-based organocatalysts and approaching that of strong Lewis acids like BF3. Coordination of the bidentate XB donor to the substrate was confirmed through structural analysis and DFT calculations of the transition states.

Transition Metal-Free N-Arylation of Amino Acid Esters with Diaryliodonium Salts

Gabriella Kervefors et al.

Summary: A transition metal-free approach using unsymmetric diaryliodonium salts with anisyl ligands has been developed for the N-arylation of amino acid derivatives, achieving high chemoselectivity and yields. This method is applicable for transferring electron deficient, electron rich, and sterically hindered aryl groups, and a cyclic diaryliodonium salt was successfully employed. The N-arylated products were obtained with retained enantiomeric excess.

Bifurcated Halogen Bonding Involving Diaryliodonium Cations as Iodine(III)-Based Double-σ-Hole Donors

Irina S. Aliyarova et al.

Summary: Three diaryliodonium tetrachloroaurates(III) were synthesized and their crystal structures revealed both three-center bifurcated halogen bonds and conventional two-center halogen bonds. Density functional theory calculations showed that the nature of these interactions is purely noncovalent, with the energies of bifurcated halogen bonds generally higher than those of two-center halogen bonds.

Tuning the Halogen Bonding Strength of Cyclic Diaryliodonium Salts

Dominik L. Reinhard et al.

Summary: Diaryliodonium(III) salts have been increasingly recognized as a new class of strong halogen bonding noncovalent organocatalysts. Comparisons between five-membered iodolium salts and six-membered iodininium derivatives have shown that the former are stronger halogen bond donors in terms of binding constants towards Lewis bases.

Remote Substituents as Potential Control Elements for the Solid-State Structures of Hypervalent lodine(III) Compounds

Guobi Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of remote substituents on select families of HVI compounds to achieve predictable two-dimensional extended solid-state materials. Crystallographic analyses of various classes of HVI compounds provide insights into how different substituents and carboxylate groups can affect intermolecular interactions in the solid state.

A Hypervalent Cyclic Dibenzoiodolium Salt as a Halogen-Bond-Donor Catalyst for the [4+2] Cycloaddition of 2-Alkenylindoles

Yuki Nishida et al.

Summary: The stable hypervalent cyclic dibenzoiodolium salt acts as a strong halogen bonding donor catalyst for [4+2] cycloaddition reactions, rather than an oxidizing agent. This catalyst is effective in promoting both [4+2] cycloaddition reactions of 2-alkenylindoles and Povarov reactions with high yields.

Iodine(III)-Based Halogen Bond Donors: Properties and Applications

Raphael Robidas et al.

Summary: Halogen bonding, a non-covalent interaction between Lewis bases and electron-deficient halogen substituents, has garnered increasing attention. Research has focused on designing and evaluating halogen-containing species as donors, with particular interest in organoiodine compounds at the iodine(III) state. These compounds offer unique binding modes due to their electronic and structural properties, leading to their development and evaluation as catalysts in various model reactions.

Iodonium salts as efficient iodine(iii)-based noncovalent organocatalysts for Knorr-type reactions

Sevilya N. Yunusova et al.

Summary: Hypervalent iodine(iii)-derivatives have higher catalytic activity than other aliphatic and aromatic iodine(i)- or bromine(i)-containing substrates for a Knorr-type reaction, with dibenziodolium triflate showing the highest activity for generating N-acyl pyrazoles. The catalytic activity of iodine(iii) is attributed to its binding with a ketone, as indicated by H-1 NMR titration data and DFT calculations.
