Belowground plant-microbe communications via volatile compounds

Rouhallah Sharifi et al.

Summary: Volatile compounds in the rhizosphere play crucial roles in biological communications and interactions, affecting the behavior of plants and microbes. Understanding and studying these volatile emissions is essential for improving plant growth and health, as well as for shaping the microbial community in the rhizosphere.

Volatile compounds-the language of all kingdoms?

A. Corina Vlot et al.

Summary: The article discusses the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as communication compounds between plants and insects, as well as their release and mediation of interactions in various organisms. These studies are important for understanding the biological and ecological functions of microbial VOCs (mVOCs) and their potential application in sustainable crop protection.

Action mechanisms of small microbial volatile compounds in plants

Samuel Gamez-Arcas et al.

Summary: Microorganisms communicate with plants by exchanging chemical signals throughout the phytosphere. Beneficial microorganisms emit volatile compounds before direct contact with plants, promoting plant growth, photosynthesis, and inducing various changes in plants. These compounds can enhance plant drought tolerance, improve water and nutrient acquisition, and influence plant responses to microbial volatile emissions.

Starch biosynthesis in guard cells has features of both autotrophic and heterotrophic tissues

Sabrina Flutsch et al.

Summary: In this study, we characterized the starch synthesis dynamics in guard cells (GCs) and discovered that GCs have metabolic features of both photoautotrophic and heterotrophic cells. We found that GCs use different carbon precursors to synthesize starch depending on the time of day, which can come from both GC photosynthesis and sugars imported from the leaf mesophyll. We also identified the major enzymes involved in GC starch synthesis and demonstrated their temporal activation according to the fluctuations of stomatal aperture.

Sucrose synthases are not involved in starch synthesis in Arabidopsis leaves

Maximilian M. F. F. Funfgeld et al.

Summary: Through re-examination of experimental data, the study shows that starch synthesis in leaves primarily relies on ADPG pyrophosphorylase in chloroplasts, while sucrose synthase in the cytosol makes no substantial contribution to transitory starch synthesis in Arabidopsis leaves. This finding resolves a long-standing controversy in photosynthetic metabolism.

Proteostatic Regulation of MEP and Shikimate Pathways by Redox-Activated Photosynthesis Signaling in Plants Exposed to Small Fungal Volatiles

Kinia Ameztoy et al.

Summary: This study found that plant responses to fungal volatile emissions involve chloroplast-to-nucleus retrograde signaling of redox-activated photosynthesis leading to proteostatic regulation of the MEP and shikimate pathways.

Enhanced Yield of Pepper Plants Promoted by Soil Application of Volatiles From Cell-Free Fungal Culture Filtrates Is Associated With Activation of the Beneficial Soil Microbiota

Edurne Baroja-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Plants communicate with microorganisms through chemical signals in the phytosphere, which is crucial for plant growth and ecosystem functioning. Beneficial microorganisms release compounds that promote plant growth and yield. Application of filtrates from beneficial and phytopathogenic fungi can alter the soil microbiota and stimulate plant responses through biogenic volatile organic compounds.

RNA-seq analysis of laser microdissected Arabidopsis thaliana leaf epidermis, mesophyll and vasculature defines tissue-specific transcriptional responses to multiple stress treatments

Oliver Berkowitz et al.

Summary: The research investigated the transcriptomes of different leaf tissues in Arabidopsis under various stress pathways, revealing a decrease in the overall number of expressed genes in response to stress stimuli. While no common stress response was identified, there was overlap of differentially expressed genes between tissues for individual treatments. Specific analysis indicated an interaction between auxin and ethylene in mediating retrograde signaling during mitochondrial dysfunction in the epidermis.

A Holistic Approach to Study Photosynthetic Acclimation Responses of Plants to Fluctuating Light

Armida Gjindali et al.

Summary: Plants adjust their photosynthetic processes to adapt to fluctuating light in the environment. The interconnection of short-term and long-term photosynthetic responses presents a challenge in studying plant acclimation to light fluctuations. Mathematical modeling can help differentiate short-term regulatory responses from long-term acclimation responses, integrating physiological processes across different timescales.

Acclimation of Photosynthesis to Changes in the Environment Results in Decreases of Oxidative Stress in Arabidopsis thaliana

Mohd Fauzihan Karim et al.

Summary: The dynamic acclimation of photosynthesis is crucial for enhancing a plant's fitness under varying light conditions. Plants lacking GPT2 show increased susceptibility to oxidative stress due to defective acclimation to changes in light intensity.
