The plasma membrane H+-ATPase FgPMA1 regulates the development, pathogenicity, and phenamacril sensitivity of Fusarium graminearum by interacting with FgMyo-5 and FgBmh2

Luoyu Wu et al.

Summary: The study characterized two plasma membrane H+-ATPases, FgPMA1 and FgPMA2, in Fusarium graminearum, revealing that FgPMA1 plays a crucial role in plant nutrition growth, pathogenicity, and mycotoxin production, as well as interacts with the target of phenamacril used for controlling Fusarium head blight, FgMyo-5. This study identified a novel regulating mechanism of FgPMA1 in pathogenicity and phenamacril sensitivity of Fusarium graminearum.

PR1-mediated defence via C-terminal peptide release is targeted by a fungal pathogen effector

Yi-Chang Sung et al.

Summary: The effector SnTox3 interacts with wheat pathogenesis-related protein 1 (TaPR-1) and influences its function by inhibiting the release of TaCAPE1, therefore activating host defense mechanisms. SnTox3 also independently induces necrosis and suppresses host defense, showcasing its dual functionality in disease development.

Extracellular Vesicles from Fusarium graminearum Contain Protein Effectors Expressed during Infection of Corn

Donovan Garcia-Ceron et al.

Summary: This study revealed that EVs from Fgr contain protein effectors crucial for fungal virulence, some of which lack predicted secretion signals. Transcriptomic analysis of corn plants infected by Fgr showed high expression of effector genes, indicating that Fgr EVs may serve as a mechanism for unconventional effector and virulence factor secretion. These findings expand our knowledge on fungal EVs in plant pathogenesis and may contribute to the discovery of new antifungals.

Interplay of two transcription factors for recruitment of the chromatin remodeling complex modulates fungal nitrosative stress response

Yunqing Jian et al.

Summary: In this study, Jian et al. identified two transcriptional regulators in the phytopathogen Fusarium graminearum that control the nitrosative stress response by modulating the recruitment of a chromatin-remodelling complex at the promoters of the response genes.

Comparative Genomics of Eight Fusarium graminearum Strains with Contrasting Aggressiveness Reveals an Expanded Open Pangenome and Extended Effector Content Signatures

Tarek Alouane et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the genomes of eight European Fusarium graminearum strains with varying levels of aggressiveness, revealing intra-species diversity and potential determinants of aggressiveness in the pathogen. The analysis outlined a reference pangenome expanding the known gene repertoire by 32%, highlighted over 1000 genes under diverse selection, and described 900 secreted protein clusters which may play key roles in infection dynamics.
