Exogenous nitric oxide reduces postharvest anthracnose disease and maintains quality of custard apple (Annona squamosaL.) fruit during ripening

Ghulam Khaliq et al.

Summary: The study showed that treatment with 100 μM sodium nitroprusside (SNP) significantly reduced anthracnose disease incidence and severity in custard apple, while also maintaining fruit quality and antioxidant activities. This suggests that exogenous nitric oxide treatment could be a promising approach to enhance resistance against fungal pathogens and preserve postharvest quality in custard apple.

Exogenous Nitric Oxide Delays Ripening and Maintains Postharvest Quality of Pointed Gourd During Storage

Mohammed Wasim Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The study found that nitric oxide treatment can significantly improve the shelf life and quality of pointed gourd, including maintaining chlorophyll, phenolics, antioxidant activity, and membrane integrity, as well as suppressing weight loss and yellow color development. NO treatment also positively influenced enzyme activity (PAL and LOX).

Nitric oxide maintains postharvest quality of navel orange fruit by reducing postharvest rotting during cold storage and enhancing antioxidant activity

Liqin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fumigation with 15 mu I L-1 nitric oxide (NO) on the quality of 'Newhall' navel orange fruit stored at 5 degrees Celsius. The results showed that NO treatment could significantly reduce weight loss, maintain important nutrient contents, suppress respiration rate, enhance antioxidant capacity, and increase disease resistance related enzyme activities in the fruit. Application of NO could be a promising method to preserve the quality of postharvest navel oranges in the future.

Recent advances in polyphenol oxidase-mediated plant stress responses

Jin Zhang et al.

Summary: Plant polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) are important enzymes in plant defense against herbivores and pathogens, with extensive research uncovering their sophisticated mechanisms over the past few decades. Understanding the regulation and defensive roles of PPOs has driven the development of new hypotheses and advanced studies in this field. Further exploration of unexplored dimensions of PPO defense functions, such as co- and post-transcriptional processes, should be a future research priority.

Preharvest sprays with sodium nitroprusside induce resistance in harvested muskmelon against the pink rot disease

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: Pink rot caused by Trichothecium roseum is a significant postharvest disease of muskmelon, leading to substantial losses. The application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) during fruit development reduced decay incidence and lesion area, while also affecting antioxidant enzymes and the phenylpropanoid pathway. Preharvest SNP sprays showed promising results in enhancing resistance and reducing postharvest losses, indicating a potential new approach for controlling muskmelon diseases.

Molecular cloning and expression analysis of hydrogen peroxide sensors under H2O2 and ROS inhibitor treatment in 'Kyoho' grape berry

Hai-Nan Liu et al.

Summary: Research uncovered that hypotaurine can reduce hydrogen peroxide content by increasing ROS-scavenging enzyme activity, thus slowing down senescence of grape berries. The four identified VvHPCAs in grape may function as hydrogen peroxide sensors and regulate hydrogen peroxide signaling and metabolism.

Postharvest factors affect under-skin browning in 'Honey Gold' mango fruit

Guoqin Li et al.

Summary: Under-Skin Browning (USB) in 'Honey Gold' mango fruit is affected by factors such as vibration, holding temperature, and sap components. The severity of USB is influenced by temperature during storage and the concentration of phenolics in affected tissue. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) activities are not found to be regulatory factors in USB expression, while sap components may play a role in USB development under specific postharvest conditions.

A transcriptional study of the effects of nitric oxide on rachis browning in table grapes cv. Thompson Seedless

Zhonghong Wu et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) delays rachis browning in postharvest table grapes by preventing water loss, reducing phenols accumulation, inhibiting PPO activity, and inducing POD activity. Additionally, NO down-regulates PPO1, up-regulates POD3, and affects the expression of PAL2 and PAL3 in grape rachis, ultimately improving freshness and extending shelf life.

T. Adhikary et al.

Summary: Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was found to effectively reduce quality loss, retain color and firmness, suppress browning and respiration rate, and sustain nutrient content in stored pear fruit. Additionally, SNP treatments also inhibited the activity of fruit softening enzymes and prolonged the storability and sensory quality of pear fruit.
