Lycorine and organ protection: Review of its potential effects and molecular mechanisms

Haoxiang Xiao et al.

Summary: This article reviews and discusses the effects and mechanisms of lycorine in the treatment of multi-organ dysfunction, especially sepsis. By regulating autophagy and inducing cancer cell apoptosis, as well as exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, antimalarial, and antitumor effects, lycorine can ameliorate organ damage. Research has found that lycorine has an important effect on organ damage in sepsis. Lycorine, as a promising natural organ protective agent, provides a new theoretical basis for the treatment of organ protection, especially in sepsis.

Biosynthesis of alkaloids in Amaryllidaceae plants: a review

Isabel Desgagne-Penix

Summary: Amaryllidaceae alkaloids are a group of specialized metabolites primarily found in the Amaryllidaceae plant family, with over 600 naturally occurring varieties identified, including galanthamine used to treat neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease. Limited commercial availability hinders their clinical development despite promising pharmacological potential. There have been significant advancements in understanding the biosynthesis of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids in recent years through comparative transcriptomic and biochemical approaches.
