Multi-objective optimization on flow characteristics of pressure swirl nozzle: A LES-VOF simulation

Yuxiao Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical study on the flow characteristics of pressure swirl nozzles is conducted using a multi-objective optimization method with large-eddy simulation and volume-of-fluid. The results show that the discharge orifice diameter, liquid viscosity, and inlet pressure are key factors affecting spray characteristics, with viscosity playing a crucial role in air core formation.

Study of the secondary droplet breakup mechanism and regime map of Newtonian and power law fluids at high liquid-gas density ratio

Krishna Kant et al.

Summary: This work reports a numerical investigation on the secondary breakup of non-Newtonian droplets under different Weber and Ohnesorge numbers. The study reveals the effects of flow parameters on the secondary breakup and proposes a generalized relation for the critical Weber number for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

Three-dimensional simulation of impinging jet atomization of soft mist inhalers using the hybrid VOF-DPM model

Wen Jin et al.

Summary: Impinging jet atomization is a new approach in drug delivery for inhalation therapy. Numerical simulation is used to better understand the dynamics of the impinging jet. A computational fluid dynamics model was used to simulate the atomization process, which couples the Volume of Fluid method, Discrete Phase Model, and Adaptive Mesh Refinement. The study reveals the influence of the flow field inside the nozzle on the atomization characteristics.

Summary: In this study, detailed experimental measurements of a large-droplet spray nozzle were conducted, and a multi-physics multi-phase numerical model was developed to simulate the spray dynamics. The numerical model was validated and it was found that changes in the nozzle geometry have a significant effect on the spray performance.

Numerical investigation on the hole characteristics and perforation mechanism of conical liquid sheet

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the conical liquid sheet formed by a swirl nozzle was numerically investigated using volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The breakup process of the liquid sheet was found to be dominated by different modes depending on the Reynolds number (Re). A model was proposed to predict the expansion speed and rim radius of the hole, and its validity was confirmed by the numerical results. The flow instability in the liquid sheet was successfully predicted and its mechanism for the formation of perforations was revealed. A perforation time model was also proposed to predict the formation process of holes.

Multiscale simulation of atomization process and droplet particles diffusion of pressure-swirl nozzle

Haiming Yu et al.

Summary: The study proposed a multiscale method to investigate the atomization characteristics of pressure-swirl nozzle for dust reduction, focusing on internal flow field, primary atomization, and secondary atomization. Large eddy simulation, volume of fluid model, and adaptive mesh refinement method were used to predict liquid core breakup and calculate secondary breakup of bigger droplets.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical performance evaluation of an electrostatic rotary bell sprayer with a focus on droplet charge, electric field, and ambient conditions. The simulation shows that different parametric values for droplet charging and electric field coupling significantly impact the atomized droplet distribution and deposition rate.

Study of pressure-swirl atomizer with spiral path at design point and outside of design point

Kiumars Khani Aminjan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on pressure-swirl atomizers with a spiral path, exploring the flow development under different pressure levels. Results show that increasing pressure leads to a larger spray cone angle and smaller droplet diameter. Additionally, increasing the cross-section and length of the spiral path results in thicker fluid film and larger droplet diameter with a reduced spray cone angle.

Droplet breakup and coalescence of an internal-mixing twin-fluid spray

Summary: The air-assisted spray consists of a bulk of tiny droplets entrained by high-speed gas-phase flow, with droplets less than 5 micrometers in diameter accounting for the majority. In the far-field of the spray, coalescence dominates droplet collision dynamics.
