Propulsive performance and vortex wakes of multiple tandem foils pitching in-line

Pan Han et al.

Summary: Numerical studies on multiple hydrofoils pitching in an in-line configuration show that by choosing the undulatory phase for each foil, a position-fixed three-foil system can generate a '2P' wake to achieve the maximum thrust production and propulsive efficiency simultaneously, especially at Reynolds number Re = 500. Additionally, the study on the effects of three-dimensionality demonstrates that a three-foil system with larger aspect ratio performs better hydrodynamically, following a similar trend as the two-dimensional (2D) foil system.

Global Vision-Based Formation Control of Soft Robotic Fish Swarm

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: Soft robotic individuals possess high adaptability and low cost, and can form into a swarming system to enhance performances in practical applications. The study of a soft robotic fish swarm with global vision positioning showed the ability to quickly shift formations, mimicking natural creatures' swarming behaviors. The design principles of the soft robotic fish swarm system could guide future research on soft robots and robotic swarms for underwater applications.

Implicit coordination for 3D underwater collective behaviors in a fish-inspired robot swarm

Florian Berlinger et al.

Summary: Fish are able to display complex collective behaviors in the water by visually observing nearby neighbors, without the need for explicit communication. This study demonstrates the potential for underwater robot collectives to achieve similar complex behaviors through implicit communication mediated by blue light production and sensing.

Using a robotic platform to study the influence of relative tailbeat phase on the energetic costs of side-by-side swimming in fish

Liang Li et al.

Summary: Swimming together in coordinated schools can help fish extract energy from vortices shed by their neighbors, reducing locomotion costs. Bio-inspired robotic models show that swimming in pairs significantly increases speed and efficiency, but individuals can also slightly improve their power efficiency by changing relative tailbeat phase.

Identification methodology of special behaviors for fish school based on spatial behavior characteristics

Xiaoning Yu et al.

Summary: The proposed scheme is based on simulation feature point selection and effectively monitors special behaviors of fish school, enhancing fish welfare monitoring and aquaculture informatization. By comparing with traditional models, the scheme shows significant improvements in the accuracy of feeding behavior and stress behavior detection.
