Sensitivity analysis of orifice length of micro-cavity array for the purpose of turbulence attenuation

Gianni F. Severino et al.

Summary: This paper presents a parametric study on the sensitivity of a micro-cavity array's ability to attenuate turbulence within the boundary layer to the aspect ratio of the orifices installed. The results indicate that larger orifice aspect ratios lead to greater reductions in turbulence intensity, supporting the claim that the orifices of a micro-cavity array should be as large as possible.

Experimental study on drag reduction of the turbulent boundary layer via porous media under nonzero pressure gradient

Hai Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flow structure in a fully developed turbulent boundary layer with porous media. The results showed that porous media reduce the velocity gradient and friction drag, with a greater effect downstream. The statistical characteristics of the turbulent flow field and structure are also affected by the porous surface.

Finite-length porous surfaces for control of a turbulent boundary layer

Azadeh Jafari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of finite-length porous surfaces with a subsurface chamber for controlling the turbulent boundary layer. Different chamber configurations were tested, and it was found that a short porous surface with individual cavities underneath each perforation was the most effective in reducing turbulence.

Modification of a turbulent boundary layer by circular cavities

Francesco Scarano et al.

Summary: This study investigates how well-chosen perforations in a wall flow can locally reduce skin friction drag by modifying the generation of bursts in the boundary layer. Experimental and simulation results show that the perforated plate thickens the viscous sublayer and decreases the friction velocity, leading to a decrease in burst intensity and duration.

Drag reduction in a turbulent boundary layer with sinusoidal riblets

Gioacchin Cafiero et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of sinusoidal riblets on near-wall characteristics of turbulent boundary layer. It is found that sinusoidal riblets generally achieve higher drag reduction compared to longitudinal riblets under the same conditions, with values up to 10%. This drag reduction is associated with an attenuation of turbulence intensity in the buffer layer and reduction of Reynolds shear stresses.
