Time structure of pencil beam scanning proton FLASH beams measured with scintillator detectors and compared with log files

Eleni Kanouta et al.

Summary: A fast scintillator detector system was developed to measure the spot and transition duration in FLASH treatments. The detector system was tested in both phantom and in vivo experiments, showing good agreement with log files and demonstrating its feasibility for preclinical studies.

AAPM Task Group Report 290: Respiratory motion management for particle therapy

Heng Li et al.

Summary: Respiratory motion-induced dose uncertainty is a significant concern in the treatment of thoracic and abdominal lesions using particle beams. This report reviews the impact of tumor motion and dosimetric considerations in particle radiotherapy, discusses current motion-management techniques and limitations, and provides guidance for quality assurance of motion-management procedures.

Management of Motion and Anatomical Variations in Charged Particle Therapy: Past, Present, and Into the Future

Julia M. Pakela et al.

Summary: The major aim of radiation therapy is to provide curative or palliative treatment to cancerous malignancies while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Charged particle radiotherapy utilizing carbon ions or protons is uniquely suited for this task due to its ability to achieve highly conformal dose distributions around the tumor volume. Various strategies have been developed and implemented to monitor and correct for patient motion, but more work remains. Emerging technologies such as particle-based radiography imaging, tumor tracking and FLASH, and artificial intelligence show potential for improving motion mitigation in charged particle therapy.

Validation of dose distribution for liver tumors treated with real-time-image gated spot-scanning proton therapy by log data based dose reconstruction

Takahiro Yamada et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the reliability of dose distributions for liver tumors treated with real-time-image gated SSPT (RGPT). Results show that the accumulated dose distributions demonstrate a high level of accuracy, with average differences in maximum and minimum doses below 1.3%.

3D dosimetric validation of ultrasound-guided radiotherapy with a dynamically deformable abdominal phantom

Charles K. Matrosic et al.

Summary: The study aimed to benchmark gel dosimetry measurements in a dynamically deformable abdominal phantom for intrafraction image guidance through a multi-dosimeter comparison. Results showed good agreement between gel dosimeters and ion chamber measurements, as well as the improvement in treatment delivery with the inclusion of the ultrasound image guidance system.

Empirical quenching correction in radiochromic silicone-based three-dimensional dosimetry of spot-scanning proton therapy

Lia Barbosa Valdetaro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the viability of an empirical correction model for 3D radiochromic silicone-based dosimeters irradiated with spot-scanning proton therapy. The model successfully corrected for signal quenching effects, allowing for accurate dosimetric measurements in complex dose distributions for proton therapy. Differences in dose response and signal quenching were observed between dosimeters of different sizes.
