Non-Hermitian and topological photonics: optics at an exceptional point

Midya Parto et al.

Summary: In recent years, concepts from non-Hermitian physics have been successfully deployed in optics and other fields, leading to the discovery of counterintuitive phenomena. These ideas have extended to other areas in search of new behaviors and functionalities that would have been impossible in standard Hermitian arrangements.

Nondissipative non-Hermitian dynamics and exceptional points in coupled optical parametric oscillators

Arkadev Roy et al.

Summary: The engineered non-Hermitian systems with exceptional points (EPs) can lead to extraordinary phenomena in various fields. This study introduces the non-Hermitian dynamics of coupled optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and highlights their advantages over conventional systems, showcasing unique potentials such as spectral anti-parity-time symmetry and advanced EP demonstrations. Coupled OPOs offer unprecedented opportunities for realizing nonlinear dynamical systems for enhanced sensing and quantum information processing.

Emulating exceptional-point encirclements using imperfect (leaky) photonic components: asymmetric mode-switching and omni-polarizer action

J. B. Khurgin et al.

Summary: Non-Hermitian systems in photonics have gained significant attention for the possibility of asymmetric mode-switching and omni-polarizer action through dynamic encirclement of exceptional points (EPs). By introducing the concept of encirclement emulators and utilizing simple configurations to mimic the physics of encircling EPs, linear asymmetric mode-switching and omni-polarizer action can be easily achieved with similar performance and limitations, providing a new perspective for applications in non-Hermitian photonics.

Efficient parametric amplification via simultaneous second harmonic generation

Noah Flemens et al.

Summary: The concept of efficient optical parametric amplification (OPA) based on simultaneously phase-matched idler second harmonic generation (SHG) is introduced, which allows for amplification efficiency exceeding that of conventional OPA. A Duffing oscillator model is developed to unify the description of conventional OPA and amplification accompanied by idler photon displacement. A spatiotemporal analysis predicts energy conversion up to 55% in devices based on birefringent or superlattice quasi-phase matching in common bulk media.
