An Experimental Evaluation of Quenched Fe-Ga Alloys: Structural Magnetic and Magnetostrictive Properties

V. Vijayanarayanan et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of quenching on Fe-Ga alloys and found that quenching reduces the magnetostriction in the 25% Ga alloy but promotes a first-order transition in the production of the D0(3) structure in the 20% Ga alloy. Additionally, lowering the nonmagnetic element Ga enhances the saturation magnetization, while increasing Ga content and quenching temperature leads to more material flaws and dislocations.

Effects of Ga on the microstructure and magnetostriction of Fe-Ga alloys for actuators

V. Vijayanarayanan et al.

Summary: The microstructure and magnetostrictive properties of Arc melted Fe100-x-Gax alloys (x = 20, 25) were investigated. The results showed the presence of A2 and DO3 phases in the body-centered cubic structure, with the alloy containing 25% Ga having an increased lattice parameter and total magnetic moment. Optical microscopy revealed that higher substitution of Ga atoms led to larger grain size and fewer dark pits. The improved magnetostriction of the Fe75-Ga25 alloy makes it suitable for sensor and actuator applications.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of quenching on Fe100-x-Gax (x=20 and 25) alloys, comparing the properties of different gallium content alloys and finding that the presence of the D03 structure affects magnetostriction and decreases saturation magnetization.

Structural, magnetic and electronic properties of Fe-Ga-Tbx (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.85) alloys: Density-functional theory study

M. O. Adelani et al.

Summary: The structural, magnetic and electronic properties of Fe-Ga-Tbx (0 <= x <= 1.85) alloys have been studied using density functional theory. The addition of Tb atoms into Fe-Ga alloy increases lattice parameter and magnetostriction, with the largest value observed for Fe79.69Ga19.53M0.78 composition. The increase in magnetostriction is attributed to the presence of nonbonding states around the Fermi level, and the simulated Curie temperature is in good agreement with experimental data.

Mechanical spectroscopy of atomic ordering in Fe-(16-21)Ga-RE alloys

I. S. Golovin et al.

Summary: The anelasticity of Fe-(16-21)at% Ga-RE alloys was studied at room and elevated temperatures, revealing two thermally-activated and two transient effects in most alloys. Investigation into the structure and phase transitions of Fe-Ga alloys helped explain these phenomena. In situ techniques such as neutron diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and internal friction provided evidence for D0(3) ordering and disordering processes in the alloys, supporting the tentative explanation of thermally activated transitory effects.
