Systematic literature review on the benefit of patient protection shielding during medical X-ray imaging: Towards a discontinuation of the current practice

Eleni Theano Samara et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of recent literature to assess the benefits and disadvantages of patient shielding during medical X-ray imaging. The findings suggest that while patient shielding may result in minimal dose savings, it also has significant dose- and non-dose-related detrimental effects. Therefore, the routine usage of patient shielding in medical X-ray imaging can be safely discontinued for all modalities and patient groups.
