An s-shaped three-parameter (S3) traffic stream model with consistent car following relationship

Qixiu Cheng et al.

Summary: A new S3 traffic flow model was proposed in this study to represent the relationship between flow, speed, and density in highway traffic, which was calibrated using real-world traffic data. This study also derived a consistent car-following model based on the proposed S-shaped speed-density function.

The vehicle length effect on the traffic flow fundamental diagram

W. Marques Jr et al.

Summary: Recent applications of a new methodology have shown that critical parameters of flow-density and speed-spacing diagrams on freeways are dependent on vehicle length. In response to this, the study presents a generalization of the Prigogine-Herman traffic equation for aggressive drivers, taking into account the effective length of vehicles. The approach is similar to that used for dense gases by Enskog and provides fundamental diagrams that align well with empirical traffic data.

Macroscopic traffic flow modeling with physics regularized Gaussian process: A new insight into machine learning applications in transportation

Yun Yuan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a physics regularized machine learning (PRML) framework to enhance traffic flow modeling accuracy, especially in cases with small or noisy training datasets. By leveraging a stochastic physics regularized Gaussian process (PRGP) model and a physics regularizer based on macroscopic traffic flow models, the new approach shows superior estimation precision and robustness to noisy training datasets, surpassing previous methods.

A method for using crowd-sourced trajectories to construct control-independent fundamental diagrams at signalized links

Walid Fourati et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology for measuring traffic quantities from crowd-sourced trajectories to estimate saturation flow rates. The approach was empirically tested and proved to be effective in estimating quantities over entire networks based on long-term datasets. It is particularly advantageous for estimations under unpredictable conditions associated with conflicting movements.
