A novel hierarchical cooperative merging control model of connected and automated vehicles featuring flexible merging positions in system optimization

Zhixian Tang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel hierarchical system optimal cooperative merging control model considering flexible merging positions (CMC-FMP) to realize safe and efficient merging processes. The model includes tactical planning and motion planning to optimize merging sequence and critical vehicle states. A Monte Carlo Tree Search-based decomposition algorithm is used to improve computational efficiency, and its solutions have good optimality.

Can automated driving prevent crashes with distracted Pedestrians? An exploration of motion planning at unsignalized Mid-block crosswalks

Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore innovative approaches for safe and reasonable automated driving in response to distracted pedestrians at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks (UMCs). Two new models, rule-based and learning-based, were developed for AVs. The results revealed that the hybrid model, which combines the rule-based and learning-based approaches, outperforms the other two models in preventing crash hazards from distracted pedestrians.

A novel agent-based framework for evaluating pedestrian safety at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks

Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel agent-based framework for evaluating pedestrian safety at unsignalized crosswalks, taking into account behavioral elements such as reaction time, visual obstacles, and safety margin time. The framework shows promising results in reproducing reliable distributions of post encroachment time and sensitivity analysis reveals factors that increase the probability of serious conflicts.

Evaluation of pedestrian critical gap and crossing speed at midblock crossing using image processing

Y. Alver et al.

Summary: This research investigates pedestrians' gap acceptance and crossing speed at midblock crossings in Izmir, Turkey using image processing methods. The study found that the critical gaps for pedestrians ranged between 4.1 seconds and 6.2 seconds, while the 15th percentile crossing speeds were similar, ranging between 0.78 m/s and 0.80 m/s.

Heter-Sim: Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems Simulation by Interactive Data-Driven Optimization

Jiaping Ren et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel multi-agent simulation algorithm that combines physics-based simulation and data-driven techniques to generate plausible behaviors for different types of agents. Motion states of agents are estimated from real-world datasets, and an optimization algorithm considers multiple constraints to control agent behaviors. The algorithm can efficiently simulate large numbers of agents and has been validated for plausibility through user studies.

Interactions between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks considering occlusions by opposing vehicles

Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the safety performance of AVs interacting with pedestrians on UMCs, finding that when opposing vehicles are in stationary queue conditions, %SPETs are sensitive to the net distance between the last opposing vehicles in the queue and crosswalks; when opposing vehicles are in free flow conditions, %SPETs are influenced by multiple factors.

What can we learn from Automated Vehicle collisions? A deductive thematic analysis of five Automated Vehicle collisions

Siobhan E. Merriman et al.

Summary: There have been a number of high-profile collisions involving Automated Vehicles on the road, which may deter the public from purchasing and using them. Driver training is proposed as a solution, and a deductive thematic analysis on high-profile collisions has shown how driver behavior contributes to accidents. The analysis suggests that future driver training programs for Automated Vehicles should cover all identified themes to reduce collisions.

Analysis of Street-Crossing Behavior: Comparing a CAVE Simulator and a Head-Mounted Display among Younger and Older Adults

Prashant Pala et al.

Summary: The study compared street crossing behavior and subjective evaluations of younger and older adult pedestrians using different types of pedestrian simulators. Results showed that participants in the HMD condition crossed the street more frequently, with shorter safety margins, compared to the CAVE condition. Older adults caused more collisions, had shorter safety margins, and a slower crossing speed in both simulators, demonstrating age-related differences in street-crossing behaviors. The HMD produced a higher presence and preference level than the CAVE did, suggesting its potential for studying pedestrian behavior.
