Overview of the MOSAiC expedition: Snow and sea ice

Marcel Nicolaus et al.

Summary: This study conducted year-round observations of the physical properties and processes of snow and ice in the Arctic Ocean, aiming to understand the interaction between the ice pack, atmosphere, and ocean. The results showed that the spatial variability of snow is crucial for understanding snow-related feedback processes, and the ice pack undergoes rapid transformations and motions during drift. These findings are important for improving climate models and validating remote sensing methods.

Characterizing the sea-ice floe size distribution in the Canada Basin from high-resolution optical satellite imagery

Summary: The structure of sea-ice floe size distribution (FSD) is sensitive to classification threshold values, showing a power-law regime between certain floe areas with slopes correlating to sea-ice concentrations. There is a seasonal variation in slopes for sites with seasonal sea-ice concentration cycles, while sites with year-round sea-ice cover show no seasonal changes in FSD properties.

Comparing Observations and Parameterizations of Ice-Ocean Drag Through an Annual Cycle Across the Beaufort Sea

Samuel Brenner et al.

Summary: Understanding and predicting sea ice dynamics and ice-ocean feedback processes require accurate descriptions of momentum fluxes across the ice-ocean interface. By using observations from moorings in the Beaufort Sea and a force-balance approach, drag coefficient values over an annual cycle and a range of ice conditions were determined, with reasonable prediction capabilities when ice geometry is known.
