Moderate and severe diabetic ketoacidosis at type 1 diabetes onset in children over two decades: A population-based study of prevalence and long-term glycemic outcomes

Helen Clapin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of moderate-severe DKA at T1D diagnosis in a pediatric population and its association with long-term glycemic control. The results showed an increasing trend in the occurrence of DKA at diagnosis. Patients with moderate-severe DKA had higher HbA1c levels initially and continued to have poorer glycemic control in the long term.

Anti-interleukin-21 antibody and liraglutide for the preservation of β-cell function in adults with recent-onset type 1 diabetes: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial

Matthias von Herrath et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the combination of anti-interleukin-21 antibody and liraglutide for treating type 1 diabetes, and found that this combination therapy could preserve beta-cell function with a better safety profile compared to traditional immunomodulation methods.

A Key to T1D Prevention: Screening and Monitoring Relatives as Part of Clinical Care

Carla J. Greenbaum

Summary: The 2019 landmark report of a clinical trial showed that immune therapy could delay the onset of clinical type 1 diabetes in antibody-positive relatives by a median of 2 years, marking a significant achievement in the prevention of T1D. The next key step is to bring disease-modifying therapy for prevention or delay of T1D to clinical use from this point, by screening and monitoring relatives for T1D risk in the context of clinical care.

Increase in Prevalence of Diabetic Ketoacidosis at Diagnosis Among Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: The SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study

Elizabeth T. Jensen et al.

Summary: The prevalence of DKA at or near type 1 diabetes diagnosis has increased from 2010 to 2016, with a 2% annual increase. This increase does not seem to be attributed to changes in sociodemographic factors over time.
