Quantitative microbial population study reveals geographical differences in bacterial symbionts of Ixodes ricinus

Aleksandra Krawczyk et al.

Summary: The microbiome of Ixodes ricinus ticks varies greatly and is influenced by geographical factors. Vertically transmitted symbionts show different infection rates at different sites, while geographically close sites exhibit similar proportions of these symbionts. This is in contrast to horizontally transmitted pathogens.

Symbiont dynamics during the blood meal of Ixodes ricinus nymphs differ according to their sex

Romain Daveu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of the main endosymbiont Midichloria mitochondrii in female and male ticks, revealing significant differences between the sexes. The results demonstrate a significantly higher Midichloria load in nymphs that will become females during engorgement.

Benchmarking laboratory processes to characterise low-biomass respiratory microbiota

Raiza Hasrat et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to benchmark laboratory protocols for accurately analyzing microbial communities in low biomass samples. The study found that PCR conditions, purification methods, and sequencing kits had minimal impact on the microbial community profiles of low biomass samples. The standardized workflow recommended in this study ensures comparability of results within and between low biomass microbiome studies.

Temporal patterns in Ixodes ricinus microbial communities: an insight into tick-borne microbe interactions

E. Lejal et al.

Summary: Ticks are important vectors of pathogens, and studying the dynamics of their microbiota over time is crucial for disease risk assessment and control strategies. High-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the microbiota of Ixodes ricinus over three years, revealing seasonal and monthly variability as well as interactions within the community. Specific relationships between pathogens and tick symbionts were identified, paving the way for new strategies to control ticks and tick-borne diseases.
