Longitudinal changes in lung function in very prematurely born young people receiving high-frequency oscillation or conventional ventilation from birth

Alessandra Bisquera et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to examine the changes in lung function among extremely prematurely born adolescents and to determine if the ventilation mode immediately after birth had an impact on these changes. The results showed that there was little evidence to suggest that the mode of ventilation affected changes in lung function over time.

Tracking of lung function from 10 to 35 years after being born extremely preterm or with extremely low birth weight

Tonje Bardsen et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals born extremely preterm had significantly lower lung function trajectories from 10 to 35 years compared to those born at term, especially during the period of decline from 25 to 35 years. However, the deficits between extremely preterm-born and term-born individuals decreased with each decade of birth from 1980 to 2000.

Long-term effects of bronchopulmonary dysplasia on lung function: a pilot study in preschool children's cohort

S. Manti et al.

Summary: The study found that preschool children born with extremely low birth weight show an increase in impedance and resistance of small airways. There were no significant differences in lung function and bronchial reversibility between the BPD group and non-BPD group. However, factors such as gestational age, duration of oxygen therapy, and sepsis significantly affected respiratory function in the BPD group.

Multimodal longitudinal respiratory function assessment in very low birth weight 7-year-old children

Summary: In this study, VLBW school-aged children with BPD were found to have substantial respiratory morbidity and persistent reduction of lung function, affecting small and large airways and lung parenchyma. EIS may be an alternative tool for lung function assessment in children with BPD.
