Assisted Reproductive Technology and Perinatal Mortality: Selected States (2006-2011)

Jeani Chang et al.

Summary: This study compares trends and characteristics of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and non-ART perinatal deaths. It finds that ART is associated with a lower risk of perinatal deaths, especially before 28 weeks of gestation. This may be explained by earlier detection and management of fetal and maternal conditions in ART-conceived pregnancies.

Changes in sexual behaviour, anxiety symptoms, and quality of couple relationship of patients with infertility during the COVID-19 lockdown

Meng Dong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the perceived changes in sexual behaviour, anxiety symptoms, and couple relationship of patients with infertility during COVID-19 lockdown. Significant differences were found in the changes in sexual behaviour, stress levels, and couple relationship quality among participants with different stress levels. Factors such as sex, anxiety symptoms, decreased sexual satisfaction, sexual activity frequency, and income levels were closely related to couple relationship quality. Pathway analyses indicated that changes in sexual behaviour, anxiety symptoms, and stress levels could all predict the quality of couple relationship.

Patients' views of delayed fertility care during the COVID-19 pandemic as a conception catastrophe: the experience of US FertilityIQ users

Anu Venkatesh et al.

Summary: The study found that most patients were undergoing treatment at the time of cancelation, and the majority of clinics had resumed treatment at the time of survey. Patients experienced sadness and anger due to cancelations, and expressed concerns about reproductive chances and exclusion of partners. Emotional distress was associated with clinic cancelation, disagreement with delays, age, diagnosis, and concerns about delays and pregnancy chances.

Epidemiology of coronavirus disease 2019 in pregnancy: risk factors and associations with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes

Justin S. Brandt et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the associations of coronavirus disease 2019 with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnancy, showing that the disease is associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, primarily driven by morbidity associated with severe or critical coronavirus disease 2019. Major risk factors for associated morbidity were identified as black and Hispanic race, obesity, advanced maternal age, medical comorbidities, and antepartum admissions related to coronavirus disease 2019.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and perinatal health: a scoping review

Bethany Kotlar et al.

Summary: The Covid-19 pandemic has both direct and indirect effects on maternal health, impacting reproductive and perinatal health. Pregnant women with symptomatic Covid-19 may face more severe outcomes, but transmission during delivery or through breastmilk is unlikely. The pandemic has also led to increased mental health issues, domestic violence, decreased prenatal care visits, and greater socio-economic consequences for pregnant individuals.

Changes in preterm birth and caesarean deliveries in the United States during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Alison Gemmill et al.

Summary: The 2020 SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the US unexpectedly led to reductions in preterm delivery rates, with the largest declines observed in early and late 2020, showing a relative difference of 5%-6% between observed and expected rates. The timing of delivery and birth month played a role in these patterns, indicating the need for further study on potential mechanisms behind these changes.

Summary: The early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on natural and assisted reproductive technology (ART)-mediated birth rates. Overall birth rates drastically decreased following the crisis, with natural conceptions contributing more than ART conceptions. The closure of ART centers played only a marginal role in the overall detrimental effect on birth rates.
