Reactivity of Iridium Complexes of a Triphosphorus-Pincer Ligand Based on a Secondary Phosphine. Catalytic Alkane Dehydrogenation and the Origin of Extremely High Activity

Benjamin M. Gordon et al.

Summary: A new bulky triphosphine ligand, ((PPP)-P-tBu)Ir, has been reported to efficiently catalyze the dehydrogenation of alkanes. Compared to traditional ligands, this ligand results in a more crowded spatial arrangement around the metal center, leading to enhanced catalytic activity.

A New Paradigm in Pincer Iridium Chemistry: PCN Complexes for (De)Hydrogenation Catalysis and Beyond

Yulei Wang et al.

Summary: The discovery and development of organometallic catalysts, specifically the ligand scaffolds of d8 transition metal complexes, have had a significant impact on modern organic synthesis. The PCP-Ir complexes, based on bis(phosphine) pincer ligands, have been extensively studied for their high thermostability and activity in alkane dehydrogenation. However, their applications in organic synthesis are limited due to low functional-group compatibility and poor substrate scope. In this Account, the development of a new family of PCN-Ir complexes is described, which offers improved structural modification and novel reactivities and catalysis, broadening the scope of pincer iridium chemistry in organic synthesis.

Origin of Regioselectivity in the Dehydrogenation of Alkanes by Pincer-Iridium Complexes: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

Soumik Biswas et al.

Summary: The PCP-pincer iridium complexes exhibit high regioselectivity for the transfer dehydrogenation of n-alkanes, while the closely related PCOP and POCOP complexes do not. The difference in regioselectivity is a true kinetic phenomenon, not a result of isomerization subsequent to the formation of free alpha-olefin. The different regioselectivity of the POCOPIr vs PCPIr catalysts is attributable to the different rate-determining steps of their respective catalytic cycles, which can be explained in terms of different electronic effects of O versus CH2 linker exerted through the pincer aromatic ring.
