Seasonal Dissociation in Fossorial Activity between the Llanos' Frog Populations as a Survival Strategy in Arid Subtropical Environments

Octavio R. Rojas-Soto et al.

Summary: The study explores how two populations of the fossorial frog adjust their activity patterns in different geographical areas to retain their ecological niche characteristics, indicating that seasonal activity is a strategy to conserve their climatic niche.

Phenotypic plasticity and the colonization of new habitats: a study of a colonial spider in the Chaco region and the Cerrado

F. Fernandez Campon et al.

Summary: The colonial spider Parawixia bistriata utilizes group prey capture to broaden its foraging niche, potentially aiding in colonization of low resource habitats. Two behavioral ecotypes were identified, with one being plastic and responsive to food resources, while the other was fixed and modulated primarily by prey size. An analysis of the species' range expansion suggests that the ability to adapt group prey capture behavior may have played a role in facilitating colonization of mesic habitats.

A wolf spider from South American grasslands: phylogenetic placement and redescription of Paratrochosina amica (Mello-Leitao 1941)

Veronica Gonnet et al.

Summary: The male of the wolf spider Paratrochosina arnica was redescribed, and the female of this species was described for the first time. The phylogenetic position of P. arnica was evaluated using mitochondrial genes, revealing three different morphotypes based on colour patterns with no differences in genitalic features between males and females. Genetic and taxonomic results supported that the three morphotypes are conspecific.
