Lithium niobate microring with ultra-high Q factor above 108

Renhong Gao et al.

Summary: We demonstrate integrated lithium niobate (LN) microring resonators with high Q factors close to the material absorption limit. The microrings are fabricated on thin LN film wafers using chemo-mechanical etching, resulting in ultra-smooth interfaces and no ion-induced lattice damage. The microrings exhibit an ultralow waveguide propagation loss, enabling applications in integrated quantum light source, frequency comb generation, and nonlinear optical processes.

Integrated visible-light liquid-crystal-based phase modulators

Milica Notaros et al.

Summary: An integrated liquid-crystal-based phase modulator operating at visible wavelengths was developed and demonstrated. The device utilizes a silicon-nitride-based 300-mm-wafer foundry platform and a liquid-crystal integration process to actively tune the effective index of a section of silicon-nitride waveguide and induce a phase shift. The experimental results show that the device can achieve a significant phase shift within a compact size, providing a low-power solution for integrated systems at visible wavelengths.

High-Performance Grating Coupler Array on Silicon for a Perfectly-Vertically Mounted Multicore Fiber

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents and demonstrates a high-performance grating coupler array for coupling a silicon photonic chip to a multi-core fiber vertically, with low coupling loss, low back reflection, low channel non-uniformity, and effective crosstalk. These improved results are attributed to the design of embedding the diffractive grating in a one-port cavity formed by reflecting Bragg gratings and a metal mirror.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the dielectric cladding on thin-film lithium niobate microring resonators has a significant impact on the photorefractive effect, and removing the dielectric cladding layer can effectively alleviate this effect. This research offers a reliable method for controlling the photorefractive effect on thin-film lithium niobate, which will further enhance the performance of integrated classical and quantum photonic devices based on thin-film lithium niobate.
