Optimization of filter frequency ratio in pseudo random modulated fiber amplifiers for maximally suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering

S. K. W. Seah et al.

Summary: Filtered PRBS phase modulation scheme can enhance SBS suppression and spectral brightness compared to unfiltered scheme, but optimization of filtering strategy is required to avoid adverse effects. Numerical simulations suggest optimal filter bandwidth to PRBS modulation frequency ratios can be adjusted based on bit numbers.

Instantaneous response and suppression of SBS process in a short fiber system with binary sequence phase modulation

Meizhong Liu et al.

Summary: The study examines the instantaneous response of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a fiber system phase modulated by a binary sequence waveform. Both analytically and experimentally investigates the buildup time constant of SBS kinetics. It shows that for a fiber system with SBS buildup time constant within several nanoseconds, the Stokes intensity can be effectively suppressed by implementing a binary sequence phase modulation, exhibiting a damped-oscillation-like trend.

Kilowatt-level, narrow linewidth, polarization-maintained all-fiber amplifiers based on multi-phase coded signal modulation and laser gain competition

Wenchang Lai et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the application of multi-phase coded signal (MPCS) modulation on a high power narrow-linewidth polarization-maintained all-fiber amplifier for managing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. By combining this technique with laser gain competition, the output power of the amplifier can be increased while maintaining high polarization extinction ratio and output beam quality. This power scaling result provides a feasible method for linewidth controlling in high power fiber amplifiers, which is significant for high-power coherently and spectrally beam combining systems.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering mitigation using optimized phase modulation waveforms in high power narrow linewidth Yb-doped fiber amplifiers

Yusuf Panbiharwala et al.

Summary: External phase modulation of narrow linewidth laser radiation using optimized periodic waveforms from arbitrary waveform generator can mitigate stimulated Brillouin scattering in double-clad single mode Yb-doped optical fiber amplifier. Experimental results show an enhancement in SBS threshold with respect to optical linewidth, and the effectiveness depends on parameters such as amplifier length and period of the optimized waveforms. The study also investigates the impact of bandwidth and amplitude of modulation waveform on SBS threshold enhancement at higher optical linewidth.

Optimization and visualization of phase modulation with filtered and amplified maximal-length sequence for SBS suppression in a short fiber system: a theoretical treatment

Yifeng Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal and spectral characteristics of a signal lightwave that has been spectrally broadened through phase modulation with a maximal-length sequence (MLS). The enhancement of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold in a fiber system is evaluated numerically, showing that SBS can build up on a nanosecond-level time scale in a short fiber. The SBS suppression depends on the filtered and amplified MLS waveform parameters, such as pattern length, modulation depth, and the ratio of low-pass filter cutoff frequency to clock rate.

Visible light flashes induced by pulsed stimulated Brillouin scattering in narrow-linewidth, high-power, near-IR fiber lasers

Vishal Choudhury et al.

Summary: In Near Infrared fiber laser systems, visible light flashes were observed, likely due to high-peak-power parasitic pulses enabling Cherenkov-type phase-matched harmonic generation in optical fibers. This phenomenon could potentially occur in any laser system with high optical power.
