A Reconfigurable Reflectarray Antenna With an 8 μm-Thick Layer of Liquid Crystal

Summary: This article presents an electronically scanned reflectarray antenna based on liquid crystal (LC). The LC-based reflectarray element is designed with periodically loaded parallel H-shaped polygons on two metal layers, which enables tunable reflection phase and reduction of LC's inhomogeneity effect. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the design concept and the high beam-steering capability of the reflectarray. This work provides useful references for the design and measurement of LC-based reflectarray antennas.

Tunable terahertz topological edge and corner states in designer surface plasmon crystals

Summary: This study focuses on investigating topological edge and corner states in 2D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices using designer surface plasmon crystals (DSPCs), where vertical confinement of designer surface plasmons allows signal detection without additional covers. It is found that the formation of higher-order topological insulator can be determined by the 2D Zak phase, and zero-dimensional subwavelength corner states can be observed in designed DSPCs at the terahertz frequency band along with edge states. Furthermore, the frequency of corner states can be adjusted by modifying defect strength, such as the location or diameter of corner pillars, potentially offering a new method for confining THz waves in DSPCs.

Higher-order topological phases in tunable C3 symmetric photonic crystals

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate that multiple higher-order topological transitions can be triggered by changing the geometry of kagome photonic crystals composed of three dielectric rods. By tuning a single geometry parameter, photonic corner and edge states can emerge or disappear with higher-order topological transitions. Two distinct higher-order topological insulator phases and a normal insulator phase are revealed, and a photonic analog of the fractional corner charge is introduced to distinguish the two higher-order topological insulator phases. Our predictions can be easily realized and verified in configurable dielectric photonic crystals.
