Quality and flexural strength of laser-cut glass: classical top-down ablation versus water-assisted and bottom-up machining

Juozas Dudutis et al.

Summary: This paper compares different processing methods for glass and evaluates their impact on the flexural strength. It finds that water-assisted processing can reduce subsurface crack propagation and achieve the highest flexural strength. Although bottom-up cutting technology has lower flexural strength, it enables higher cutting speed and better cutting quality.

Ultrashort pulsed laser backside ablation of fused silica

Simon Schwarz et al.

Summary: Rectangular microchannels with vertical sidewalls in fused silica are fabricated using femtosecond laser backside ablation, allowing for control of channel depth and width through applied fluence and number of scans, with focal position adjustment enabling extension of channel depth. The flexibility of the direct writing process is demonstrated by ablating concentric rings.
