Thermal conductivity and management in laser gain materials: A nano/microstructural perspective

X. Wu et al.

Summary: The article reviews the effects of nano/microstructure on optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polycrystalline ceramics in solid state lasers, as well as recent developments in commonly used crystalline laser materials. It also discusses potential future directions for more robust laser gain materials for high-power applications. The engineering of microstructure with considerations for both optical and thermal performances is argued to offer breakthrough improvements in laser gain media.

Optical properties of transparent polycrystalline ruby (Cr:Al2O3) fabricated by high-pressure spark plasma sintering

Barak Ratzker et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the fabrication of highly transparent Cr:Al2O3 ceramics through high-pressure spark plasma sintering (HPSPS), which shows potential for laser applications. The obtained ruby ceramics exhibit high in-line transmittance and characteristic photoluminescence, making them suitable for compact laser systems.

Photoluminescence and optical properties of Eu3+/Eu2+-doped transparent Al2O3 ceramics

R. Klement et al.

Summary: Transparent Eu3+-doped alumina ceramics with fine-grained microstructure were studied for their optical properties and photoluminescence. It was found that light transmission through ceramics at high dopant concentrations is dominated by birefringence scattering at grain boundaries, while high photoluminescence intensity is achieved as a result of dopant segregation at grain boundaries. Luminescence decay in these ceramics was single-exponential with a lifetime around 1.5 ms, and the reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ under H2 atmosphere was challenging post-sintering. Additionally, two coexisting Eu2+ emitting PL centers were identified, emitting blue and green light with different decay constants.
