Global challenges in breast cancer detection and treatment

Summary: Breast cancer is a global priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These countries need to address the challenge of breast cancer with their limited resources, as the ability to detect the disease early is compromised in these regions. Limited access to healthcare also hampers treatment outcomes. Therefore, cost-effective strategies should be prioritized to improve healthcare outcomes in these countries.

Self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes: Group-based versus individual education. A systematic review with meta- analysis of randomized trails

Summary: The present study aimed to verify the efficacy of group-based versus individual education for self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that group education and individual education have similar efficacy in glucose control, but group education is also associated with improved quality of life and patients' knowledge.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Effect of screening by clinical breast examination on breast cancer incidence and mortality after 20 years: prospective, cluster randomised controlled trial in Mumbai

Summary: The study found that clinical breast examination conducted every two years by primary health workers significantly downstaged breast cancer at diagnosis and led to a non-significant 15% reduction in breast cancer mortality overall, with a significant reduction of nearly 30% in mortality in women aged 50 and older. No significant reduction in mortality was observed in women younger than 50 years. The results suggest that clinical breast examination should be considered for breast cancer screening in low and middle income countries.

Psychosocial influences on help-seeking behaviour for cancer in low-income and lower middle-income countries: a mixed-methods systematic review

Summary: This study aimed to understand the psychosocial factors influencing medical help-seeking behavior for cancer symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in low and lower middle-income countries. Results indicated that the use of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine was associated with delayed medical help-seeking. Women faced specific barriers in seeking medical help for cancer.

A scoping review of the use of visual aids in health education materials for persons with low-literacy levels

Summary: The review found that visual aids developed with persons with low-literacy can significantly improve health literacy in health education, with pictograms and videos being the most effective tools. However, there are still gaps in consent procedures and decision making for participants with low-literacy. Future research needs to focus on experimental studies in low-and middle-income countries, particularly addressing consent issues for low-literacy participants.
