The skin microbiome of infected pressure ulcers: A review and implications for health professionals

Fernanda Gomes et al.

Summary: This study identified the relationship between pressure ulcer risk factors, stages, anatomical locations, and microbial cohabitation. The prevention and monitoring of pressure ulcers are crucial for avoiding infections and reducing healthcare costs. Infection in pressure ulcers is characterized by polymicrobial biofilm-associated infection and resistance to antimicrobials.

Twenty years of endophthalmitis: Incidence, aetiology and clinical outcome

Agni Malmin et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the incidence, etiology, and outcomes of endophthalmitis over a 20-year period at a Norwegian university hospital. Postoperative endophthalmitis was the most common type, with intravitreal injections being the main cause followed by cataract surgery. The incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery has decreased significantly since 2003.

Endogenous Candida endophthalmitis: Who is really at risk?

Jessica Seidelman et al.

Summary: Through multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that the main risk factors for developing endogenous Candida endophthalmitis in candidemic patients include the presence of a central venous catheter, intravenous drug use, immunosuppression, total parenteral nutrition recipient, race, age, and Candida albicans infection. Clinicians should develop targeted and cost-effective screening strategies based on these risk factors.

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes in 314 Japanese Patients with Bacterial Endophthalmitis: A Multicenter Cohort Study from J-CREST

Hiroto Ishikawa et al.

Summary: A study found that compared to patients with endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis, patients with exogenous bacterial endophthalmitis are typically older and have more severe symptoms, but there is no significant difference in final visual acuity. Bacteria such as Streptococcus are more prevalent in exogenous endophthalmitis patients and may contribute to worsening visual outcomes.

Risk Factors for Endogenous Endophthalmitis in Hospitalized Patients with Candida Fungemia

Aditya Uppuluri et al.

Summary: By using the NIS database from 2002 to 2014, risk factors for endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) in hospitalized patients with candidemia were identified. The study found that systemic comorbidities such as endocarditis, cirrhosis, diabetes with chronic complications, intravenous drug use, radiation therapy, and solid organ transplantation increased the risk of EE in candidemia patients.
