Numerical modelling and dynamic response analysis of a 10 MW semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine subjected to ship collision loads

Zhaolong Yu et al.

Summary: The number of installed offshore wind turbines has been increasing worldwide, which are at risk of collisions with passing ships. This paper investigates the ship collision responses of a semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine using the USFOS code, and analyzes the energy absorption and structural responses.

Influence of variability and uncertainty of wind and waves on fatigue damage of a floating wind turbine drivetrain

Shuaishuai Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the short-term fatigue damage of a 10-MW floating wind turbine drivetrain under various wind and wave conditions. The variability of mean wind speed, turbulence intensity, and wind shear has a significant impact on the drivetrain, while the effect of uncertainties related to irregular waves is relatively small. The main bearings of the drivetrain are found to be the most sensitive component to environmental variables. The study provides a basis for improved design standards and engineering practice for floating wind turbine drivetrains.

Extreme loads analysis of a site-specific semi-submersible type wind turbine

Xiaosen Xu et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the use of the FAST code to analyze internal bending moments of offshore wind turbines due to environmental wave loads. A computationally efficient Monte Carlo based methodology is proposed for estimating extreme load or response statistics. The approach may be beneficial in minimizing potential FOWT mechanical damage during the design stage by defining optimal wind turbine parameters.

Design of an aeroelastic physical model of the DTU 10MW wind turbine for a floating offshore multipurpose platform prototype

S. Muggiasca et al.

Summary: Multi-purpose offshore structures are complex systems that require consideration of various requirements simultaneously. Experimental tests on scaled models are useful for verifying structural behavior and validating numerical models, with the scale playing a key role in obtaining reliable results. This paper focuses on the design of a wind turbine model for a large-scale model of a Multi-purpose offshore Platform developed within the EU project H2020 Blue Growth Farm, aiming to develop an offshore farm integrating wave energy converters, a wind turbine, and aquaculture.

Estimation of characteristic extreme response for mooring system in a complex ocean environment

Yuliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the design loads of mooring lines for offshore floating structures subjected to random loads using statistical models such as the global maxima method, Weibull distribution, POT method and ACER method. By considering different load combinations and the Nataf transformation model, a more reliable design load estimation is established.

Wind Farm Support Vessel Extreme Roll Assessment While Docking in the Bohai Sea

Xu Xiao-sen et al.

Summary: The paper focuses on the robust prediction of extreme motions during operation of maintenance vessels in offshore wind energy industry, particularly the safety of docking against wind towers. The vessel response to hydrodynamic wave loads under actual sea conditions was analyzed using AQWA software. A novel method for estimating extreme roll statistics was proposed to provide accurate extreme value prediction.
