Accumulation and decontamination kinetics of PCBs and PCDD/Fs from grass silage and soil in a transgenerational cow-calf setting

Charlotte Driesen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cow physiology on the transfer of PCBs and PCDD/Fs from grass silage and soil to cows' blood, adipose tissue, and milk, and subsequently to suckling calves. The results show that factors such as cow physiology, pollutant congener, and parity of the cow influence the transfer rates and half-lives of the pollutants.

Transfer of persistent organic pollutants in food of animal origin - Meta-analysis of published data

Farida Amutova et al.

Summary: The transfer of POPs in animal food products, particularly milk and eggs, and the bioconcentration factors in different tissues of animals have been studied. The results show that highly toxic PCDD/Fs and PCBs can transfer efficiently into milk, eggs, and liver. Differences in bioconcentration factors were observed in different studies, complicating the hierarchical analysis of tissues and congeners. High bioconcentration was also found for DDT and its metabolites.
