Global gyrokinetic simulation with kinetic electron for collisionless damping of zonal flow in stellarators

Javier H. Nicolau et al.

Summary: The helical components of the equilibrium magnetic field have significant impacts on zonal flow, while kinetic electrons can reduce zonal flow residue and increase the frequency of low frequency oscillation. Additionally, linear toroidal coupling of multiple toroidal n-harmonics barely affects zonal flows but can generate long wavelength toroidal harmonics with the same toroidal number as the helical magnetic field.

Demonstration of reduced neoclassical energy transport in Wendelstein 7-X

C. D. Beidler et al.

Summary: Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas aims to harness nuclear fusion for electricity production. Alternative concepts like the stellarator have been pursued due to shortcomings in the leading tokamak design. The design of W7-X has successfully reduced neoclassical energy transport and achieved record plasma conditions during experimental campaigns.

Global gyrokinetic simulation of neoclassical ambipolar electric field and its effects on microturbulence in W7-X stellarator

J. Y. Fu et al.

Summary: Global neoclassical simulations of a model equilibrium of the W7-X stellarator show the presence of an ambipolar electric field with ion or electron root solution depending on the temperature ratio. This field is used in turbulence simulations of ion temperature gradient instability, where it has moderate effects in the ion root case and significantly reduces the linear growth rate and turbulence intensity in the electron root case. The results suggest that the ambipolar electric field plays a crucial role in ion heat conductivity in the strong shear region.
