Leaf trait expression varies with tree size and ecological strategy in a subtropical forest

Yue Bin et al.

Summary: The impact of dramatic vertical environmental gradients in closed canopy forests on intraspecific variation in the functional traits of tree species and their ecological strategies is not well understood. We studied a subtropical forest in Asia and found that tree size affects the expression of leaf traits, and intraspecific trait variation is correlated with tree size. The amount of trait variation explained by size is more related to ecological strategies than intraspecific trait variation, maximum height, or shade tolerance.

Joint effects of climate, tree size, and year on annual tree growth derived from tree-ring records of ten globally distributed forests

Kristina J. Anderson-Teixeira et al.

Summary: The newly developed method can simultaneously model the effects of climate drivers, tree size (DBH), and calendar year on tree growth. The study shows that precipitation, temperature, DBH, and calendar year have additive or interactive effects on tree growth, with climate sensitivity often varying with tree size.

Ecological forecasting of tree growth: Regional fusion of tree-ring and forest inventory data to quantify drivers and characterize uncertainty

Kelly A. Heilman et al.

Summary: This study applies a Bayesian state-space model to analyze the ecological complexity of Pinus ponderosa var. brachyptera in the southwestern US using a fusion of tree-ring and forest inventory data. The study quantifies the effects of climate, tree size, stand density, site quality, and their interactions on tree growth and identifies the uncertainties associated with these effects. Results show negative effects of fall-spring maximum temperature and positive effects of water-year precipitation on tree growth. The study also reveals that tree vulnerability to climate stress increases with competition, tree size, and poor site conditions. Future climate scenarios are projected to cause significant declines in tree growth.

Discrepancy in growth resilience to drought among different stand-aged forests declines going from a semi-humid region to an arid region

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed an extensive tree-ring dataset to reveal the differences in drought resilience among forests of different stand ages. The results showed that older growth Qinghai spruce forest stands have higher resistance to droughts, but lower post-drought recoveries, compared to younger growth stands. The variation in resilience indices was consistent between two contrasting hydrological niche regions.

Distribution of biomass dynamics in relation to tree size in forests across the world

Camille Piponiot et al.

Summary: Tree size determines the interaction between trees and their environment, including climate change. Through analyzing 25 large-scale forest plots, it was found that in warmer forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity are more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity are more right skewed, with a longer tail towards large trees. Small trees contribute more to productivity and mortality than to biomass.

What lies beneath: Vertical temperature heterogeneity in a Mediterranean woodland savanna

Miriam R. Johnston et al.

Summary: With the increasing availability of thermal infrared remote sensing (TIR-RS) data, researchers have found diverse applications for TIR-RS measurements. However, the application of TIR-RS in plant physiology and ecology is still underdeveloped. This study used a thermal camera and the ECOSTRESS mission data to investigate the temperature gradients within tree canopies and between over- and under-story plants in a Mediterranean woodland savanna. The results showed consistent patterns of vertical thermal heterogeneity, but the comparison between the thermal camera and ECOSTRESS measurements revealed some discrepancies.

Leaf temperature and its dependence on atmospheric CO2 and leaf size

Wilfried Konrad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration on leaf temperature through a model combining leaf energy balance, gas exchange, and photosynthesis. Results show that leaf temperature is more influenced by leaf size and wind speed rather than reduced stomatal conductance caused by increased CO2 levels. The model's findings are consistent with actual measurements of leaf cooling and heating.

Tree height and leaf drought tolerance traits shape growth responses across droughts in a temperate broadleaf forest

Additionally, species with leaves that lost less water and shrinkage upon desiccation showed greater drought tolerance under dry conditions.

Optimal carbon partitioning helps reconcile the apparent divergence between optimal and observed canopy profiles of photosynthetic capacity

Thomas N. Buckley

Summary: The study found that shaded leaves have greater photosynthetic capacity per unit irradiance and smaller marginal carbon revenue of water compared to sunlit leaves, contradicting optimization theory. The model adjusted carbon partitioning, nitrogen partitioning, and leaf water potential to maximize carbon profit or canopy photosynthesis, revealing that shaded modules should have larger photosynthetic capacity per unit irradiance and smaller marginal carbon revenue of water. This was partly due to radiation-driven differences in evaporative demand and differences in hydraulic conductance arising from the need to balance returns on stem carbon investment between modules.

ForestTemp - Sub-canopy microclimate temperatures of European forests

Summary: Ecological research often uses coarse-gridded climate data based on standardized temperature measurements, which may not accurately represent forest microclimates. A study in Europe found significant differences between sub-canopy and free-air temperatures, with sub-canopy air temperatures averaging 2.1 degrees Celsius lower in summer and 2.0 degrees Celsius higher in winter. High-resolution forest sub-canopy temperature maps could improve modeling of biological processes and species distributions in the future.

Most flux variables and live biomass pools significantly increase with the logarithm of stand age.

Responses of leaf respiration to heatwaves

Andrew P. Scafaro et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial respiration is central to plant physiology and responds dynamically to daily temperature changes, but is more susceptible to short-term heatwaves. As leaf temperature rises, catalysis increases driving faster metabolism, despite declines in photosynthesis, leading to protein denaturation and inactivation of respiratory enzymes. Under extreme heat, membranes become overly fluid and enzymes are impaired, ultimately leading to the breakdown of leaf respiration and limiting leaf survival.
