On the dual effect of obstacles in preventing silo clogging in 2D

Diego Gella et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrates that introducing an obstacle reduces clog formation when discharging inert grains from a silo. The reduction is achieved through two different mechanisms: altering the kinematic properties near the outlet and introducing anisotropy in the contact fabric tensor.

Beverloo law for hopper flow derived from self-similar profiles

Fernando Alonso-Marroquin et al.

Summary: The study investigates mass flow in two-dimensional hopper flow using particle simulations and derives a flow rate law that shows dependency on bottleneck width and particle diameter. The resulting relationship enhances the Beverloo relation by incorporating the dependency of density on neck width. The parameters of the Beverloo relation are interpreted by coupling hourglass theory with free-fall arch theory.

Flow in an hourglass: particle friction and stiffness matter

Tivadar Pongo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the discharge process of granular flow from a silo through experimental and numerical methods. It found that particle stiffness significantly affects the discharge characteristics, with differences in discharge behavior observed between deformable and hard grains at different friction coefficients. The study also analyzed the pressure fields during discharge and proposed a formulation to predict the flow rate decrease with decreasing filling height for soft particles with low friction coefficient.
