Adolescent Binge Drinking Is Associated With Accelerated Decline of Gray Matter Volume

M. A. Infante et al.

Summary: This study utilized longitudinal data and found that binge drinking has negative effects on adolescent brain development, especially in the frontal regions. The study also revealed a dose-response relationship between the number of binge drinking episodes and the proximity of decreased brain volume.

Adolescent alcohol use disrupts functional neurodevelopment in sensation seeking girls

Qingyu Zhao et al.

Summary: Exogenous and endogenous factors can modulate the developmental trajectories of adolescent brain functional networks, affecting alcohol use behaviors and sexual dimorphism. Girls showed weaker within-network connectivity in certain networks compared to boys, while the effects of alcohol use were more pronounced in girls than boys in some intrinsic functional networks. These findings suggest that alcohol consumption may disrupt network efficiency, attenuating sexual differences, particularly in girls, and may explain why women are at higher risk of alcohol-related health and psychosocial consequences than men.

Commentary: Substance use and the brain: it is not straightforward to differentiate cause from consequence - a commentary on Kim-Spoon et al. (2020)

Sylia Wilson

Summary: Substance abuse is linked to differences in brain structure and function, as well as neurocognitive impairment. Research designs that can provide causal information, such as prospective longitudinal studies and twin and family studies, are essential for understanding the impact of substance use on the developing brain and identifying factors that can break the cycle of addiction.

Summary: The study found common neurobiological alterations in ADHD and AUD patients, supporting the hypothesis that ADHD could be a risk factor for the development of AUD. The results highlight the importance of early ADHD diagnosis and treatment to reduce the risk of subsequent AUD.

Volumetric trajectories of hippocampal subfields and amygdala nuclei influenced by adolescent alcohol use and lifetime trauma

Rachel D. Phillips et al.

Summary: Adolescent alcohol use and exposure to psychological trauma co-occur and have interactive effects on the hippocampus and amygdala substructures, regions essential for emotion regulation and memory. The study found that different age groups of adolescents show varying impacts, indicating the need for individualized analysis of these brain regions. The findings support the hypothesis that the amygdala and hippocampus are not homogeneous brain regions.

A Review on Initialization Methods for Nonnegative Matrix Factorization: Towards Omics Data Experiments

Flavia Esposito

Summary: Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) plays a significant role in knowledge extraction due to its ability to apply non-negativity to both bases and weights, allowing for meaningful interpretations consistent with human learning processes. The impact of NMF initialization techniques has been studied for text or image datasets, but less attention has been given to biological datasets, despite NMF's usefulness in understanding biological mechanisms with omic data. This paper presents the current research on NMF initialization schemes and discusses the preliminary findings on the impact of initialization methods when evaluating microarrays with NMF mechanisms. It appears that some biological information can be extracted regardless of the initialization scheme used.
