QUANTIFYING LOWER LIMB MUSCLE STIFFNESS AS AMBULATION FUNCTION DECLINES IN DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY WITH ACOUSTIC RADIATION FORCE IMPULSE SHEAR WAVE ELASTOGRAPHY

Chia-Wei Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, ARFI/SWE technology was used to measure lower limb muscle stiffness in DMD patients and healthy controls. It was found that DMD patients had significantly increased lower limb muscle stiffness compared to controls. The stiffness of the rectus femoris muscle increased as ambulatory ability declined, while the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscle stiffness decreased.

A Japanese case of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) with PABPN1 c.35G>C; p.Gly12Ala point mutation

Yo-Suke Nishii et al.

Summary: Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a late-onset muscular dystrophy commonly caused by the short expansion of a trinucleotide repeat in the PABPN1 gene. This case report describes a 78-year-old woman and her son with OPMD, diagnosed based on physical examination, muscle imaging, and genetic analysis. The presence of a PABPN1 point mutation in this Japanese case suggests a similar causative role in Asians as seen in Europeans.

Deep learning segmentation of transverse musculoskeletal ultrasound images for neuromuscular disease assessment

Francesco Marzola et al.

Summary: The study introduced a deep learning algorithm for cross-sectional area segmentation in musculoskeletal ultrasound images, providing quantitative grayscale analysis useful for muscle studies and validated the results in a large dataset. The algorithm demonstrated slightly lower performance in abnormal muscles compared to manual segmentation, but maintained good discrimination between healthy and abnormal muscle images.

Deep Learning of Ultrasound Imaging for Evaluating Ambulatory Function of Individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Ai-Ho Liao et al.

Summary: The study utilized deep learning of ultrasound imaging for classifying patients with DMD, with the VGG-19 model demonstrating satisfactory classification performance and feature recognition for evaluating ambulatory function. This suggests that deep learning of muscle ultrasound is a potential strategy for DMD characterization.

Diaphragm echodensity in mechanically ventilated patients: a description of technique and outcomes

Benjamin Coiffard et al.

Summary: The study found that diaphragm echodensity increased in mechanically ventilated patients at the outset, and this increase in echodensity during the early course of mechanical ventilation was associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation. Moreover, both decreases and increases in diaphragm thickness were also associated with increased echodensity.
