Mapping covariance in brain FDG uptake to structural connectivity

Igor Yakushev et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the regional 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET measures as a proxy of brain connectivity. It found that 55% of connections in the whole brain were present in both FDG(cov) and structural networks, compared to only 12% in random networks. 80% of intralobe connections were convergent, while only 30% of interhemispheric interlobe connections showed convergence.

Static versus Functional PET: Making Sense of Metabolic Connectivity

Arianna Sala et al.

Summary: This article discusses a number of fundamental issues raised by the study conducted by Jamadar et al., including terminology choice, interpretation of cross-modal findings, group-to-single subject level inferences, and the significance of metabolic connectivity as a biomarker. The authors argue that both sPET and fPET can provide valuable information about brain connectivity.

Interhemispheric functional connectivity asymmetry is distinctly affected in left and right mesial temporal lobe epilepsy

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the changes in functional connectivity (FC) and functional asymmetry in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), specifically comparing differences between left MTLE (LMTLE) and right MTLE (RMTLE). The results showed that LMTLE and RMTLE patients exhibited different patterns of FC alteration and functional asymmetry compared to controls, with RMTLE showing more extensive abnormalities. The FC asymmetry features were reduced in both patient groups, but more prominently in RMTLE. The regions involved in FC asymmetry differences were primarily located in the left temporal lobe.

Voxel-based analysis of the metabolic asymmetrical and network patterns in hypermetabolism-associated crossed cerebellar diaschisis

Yuankai Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the metabolic asymmetrical profile, network pattern, and predisposing factors for crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) in patients with contralateral supratentorial hypermetabolism. Striatum and thalamus showed the highest positive rate of CCD. The study also identifies relative hypermetabolism in the contralateral supplementary motor cortex and precuneus gyrus as a possible compensatory mechanism for the abnormal brain network related to CCD.

Crossed Cerebellar Diaschisis Indicates Hemodynamic Compromise in Ischemic Stroke Patients

Lita von Bieberstein et al.

Summary: Crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) in internal carotid artery (ICA) stroke indicates attenuated blood flow and energy metabolism in the contralateral cerebellar hemisphere. The presence of CCD may suggest severe hemodynamic impairment with larger BOLD-defined steal volume and higher flow in the ACA/PCA collateral system in patients with ICAO.

Crossed cerebellar diaschisis: risk factors and prognostic value in focal cortical dysplasia by 18F-FDG PET/CT

Yaqin Hou et al.

Summary: Crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) has been studied in epilepsy patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) using F-18-FDG PET/CT. It was found that the number of lobes involved on PET, structural anomalies on MRI, and the |AI| values in specific brain regions may be predisposing factors for CCD. The occurrence of CCD could help predict the prognosis of FCD patients at 12 months postoperatively.

Summary: This review examines the role of the cerebellum in various types of dementia and its correlation with cognitive symptoms, highlighting the importance of the cerebellum in the early stages of dementia. The findings could potentially serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for clinicians, especially in cases where distinct brain or neuropsychological alterations are not evident.

Voxel-Wise Analysis of Structural and Functional MRI for Lateralization of Handedness in College Students

Haha Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural and functional basis of handedness lateralization in the brain using resting-state functional MRI (R-fMRI) and gray matter asymmetry index. The results showed significant differences in voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and gray matter asymmetry (AI) among left-handers, right-handers, and mixed-handers. Left/mixed-handedness individuals exhibited stronger functional homotopy in transmodal association regions and more variability in primary sensorimotor cortices. The study suggests plasticity of hand movement and different patterns of emotional processing.

Red nucleus structure and function: from anatomy to clinical neurosciences

Gianpaolo Antonio Basile et al.

Summary: The red nucleus (RN) is a large subcortical structure located in the ventral midbrain, with a magnocellular part involved in the rubrospinal system and a parvocellular part in the olivocerebellar system. Despite distinct evolutionary trajectories, both regions play a prominent role in motor and non-motor behavior across different animal species. However, little is known about their function in the human brain, possibly due to notable differences between human and non-human RN and difficulties in studying this structure directly.

The hemodynamic impairment in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery territory associated with CCD was more significant, supporting the concept of a vascular component of CCD.
