Cortical Correlates of Gait Compensation Strategies in Parkinson Disease

Anouk Tosserams et al.

Summary: Gait impairment is a common problem in individuals with Parkinson's disease, and finding effective compensation strategies is crucial for rehabilitation. This study used EEG to investigate the cortical correlates of three different strategies: external cueing, internal cueing, and action observation. The results demonstrated that all three strategies induced changes in cortical activity, suggesting that different compensation strategies rely on different cortical mechanisms to achieve enhanced central motor activation.

Driving motor cortex oscillations modulates bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease

Andrea Guerra et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors found that abnormal beta and gamma oscillations in the basal ganglia are related to bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate cortical rhythms and was found to affect movement speed and amplitude in this study. Changes in inhibitory interneuronal activity may reflect compensatory mechanisms in the primary motor cortex (M1) to counteract bradykinesia.
