Brain Structure and Function Predict Adherence to an Exercise Intervention in Older Adults

Timothy P. Morris et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between individual differences in brain structure and function in older adults and adherence to exercise. The findings suggest that higher cortical thickness in certain brain regions and less surface area in others can predict exercise adherence. Additionally, higher functional connectivity in certain brain networks and less nodal strength in others are also predictive of exercise adherence.

Effects of physical activity on brain function and structure in older adults: A systematic review

C. Domingos et al.

Summary: Various studies have shown that physical activity is beneficial to brain health in older individuals, especially in brain regions vulnerable to dementia. However, due to the variability in physical activity measures, the dose-response relationship is still unclear, necessitating further research for better understanding.

Active Life for Brain Health: A Narrative Review of the Mechanism Underlying the Protective Effects of Physical Activity on the Brain

Hiroyuki Umegaki et al.

Summary: Evidence shows the beneficial effects of physical activity on cognition, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Physical activity may promote brain health through mechanisms such as increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and preserving brain volume, particularly that of the hippocampus. The mutual associations between these mechanisms are still unclear.

Exercise interventions do not impact brain volume change in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Marissa A. Gogniat et al.

Summary: Exercise interventions do not significantly affect brain volume change in older adults, based on a meta-analysis of current literature. The results indicate minimal differences in brain volume outcomes between older adults who completed exercise interventions and those in control groups under the current research conditions.
