Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression among adults with congenital heart defects

Regina M. Simeone et al.

Summary: Individuals with congenital heart defects (CHDs) have a higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depressive disorders compared to those without CHDs. Among individuals with CHDs, female sex and inpatient admission are associated with higher rates of anxiety/depressive disorders. Early screening and appropriate referral for mental health services may be beneficial for individuals with CHDs.

Sense of coherence in adults with congenital heart disease in 15 countries: Patient characteristics, cultural dimensions and quality of life

Philip Moons et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between sense of coherence (SOC) and quality of life (QoL) in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) from 15 countries, finding a positive association between SOC and QoL. Significant intercountry variation in SOC was observed, with the lowest SOC in Japan. Cultural dimensions such as power distance index and individualism vs collectivism were found to be related to SOC.

Recurrent disease progression networks for modelling risk trajectory of heart failure

Xing Han Lu et al.

Summary: Motivation Recurrent neural networks (RNN) are powerful tools for modeling medical time series data. This study focuses on heart failure (HF) and proposes a novel RNN framework named Deep Heart-failure Trajectory Model (DHTM) for long-term trajectory prediction. The results show higher prediction accuracy compared to baseline models, with the augmented model DHTM+C showing potential for improved prediction for high-risk patients. Multiple real patient examples illustrate the promising path for creating accurate and scalable longitudinal deep learning models for chronic disease modeling.

Anna Kwiatek-Wrzosek et al.

Summary: The study revealed that among ACHD patients aged 60 and above, being overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia, and arterial hypertension are the most common cardiovascular risk factors, with over half of the patients having two or more risk factors. Patients above 70 years of age are relatively healthier, and those with mild ACHD are more likely to have hypertension.

Summary: With over 90% of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) now surviving to adulthood, the focus of CHD care is shifting towards a lifespan perspective and proactive approach. Emerging concepts such as a life course epidemiology framework and long-term trajectories are providing new insights for CHD research. The potential of technology, especially machine learning, in facilitating longitudinal research and embracing big data is also highlighted.

Medicine-Based Evidence in Congenital Heart Disease: How Artificial Intelligence Can Guide Treatment Decisions for Individual Patients

Jef van den Eynde et al.

Summary: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is effective in optimizing outcomes for homogeneous cohorts of patients but struggles with individual patient care. The proposed Medicine-Based Evidence (MBE) framework utilizes big data and deep learning to create a digital twin of patients, allowing for dynamic modeling of treatment effects in a personalized manner. This approach aims to overcome the limitations of EBM and improve the quality of care through personalized medicine.

Summary: Overweight/obesity is a prevalent cardiovascular risk factor in children, which can lead to increased risk of adverse outcomes in children with heart disease. The ACC developed quality metrics, including a BMI metric, to identify and counsel overweight and obese children in cardiology clinics. Through a multicenter collaborative learning QI project, participating centers aimed to increase the percentage of children between ages 3 and 18 with a BMI > 85th percentile who received appropriate counseling.
