Surface Dyakonov-Cherenkov radiation

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: This article reports a new type of Cherenkov radiation, namely directional Dyakonov surface waves emitted from a swift charged particle moving atop a birefringent crystal. This radiation is highly sensitive to particle velocity and trajectory, allowing for simultaneous determination of particle velocity magnitude and direction on a compact platform. The study not only adds a new degree of freedom for particle identification, but also provides an all-dielectric route to construct compact Cherenkov detectors with enhanced sensitivity.

Direct mapping of attosecond electron dynamics

Chuliang Zhou et al.

Summary: Studying the subcycle interaction of light and electrons is a key frontier in free-electron lasers and dynamical investigation of matter. Through direct spatial observation of periodic electron bunch fringes, a laser streaking concept has been demonstrated to reveal the dynamics of free electrons emitted from a plasma mirror under sub-relativistic laser intensity. This provides attosecond-resolution metrology for obtaining direct evidence about light-field-induced electron dynamics in the plasma mirror and opens the way to extensive experimental investigations of the interaction of attosecond electrons with intense lasers.

Free-electron nanolaser based on graphene plasmons

H. K. Avetissian et al.

Summary: This paper explores a potential method to achieve laser emission from THz to extreme UV regions using graphene plasmons stimulated by free electrons. The analytical-quantitative description is based on a set of self-consistent Maxwell-Vlasov equations. Both downconversion and upconversion processes are studied, demonstrating the feasibility of coherent conversion between different radiation wavelengths.

Imprinting the quantum statistics of photons on free electrons

Raphael Dahan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the transition of photon statistics effects in free-electron-light interactions and the potential for ultrafast quantum tomography of light using free electrons as probes. The electron walker can perform both quantum weak measurements and projective measurements, leading to previously inaccessible concepts in quantum optics.
