Mapping peat thickness and carbon stocks of the central Congo Basin using field data

Bart Crezee et al.

Summary: The world's largest tropical peatland complex is located in the central Congo Basin, covering 167,600 km(2) and storing approximately 29.0 PgC of carbon below ground. The peat in this region has been largely sampled in the north of the Republic of the Congo, but this study presents the first extensive field surveys in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which covers two-thirds of the estimated peatland area. The findings reveal that the central Congo Basin plays a globally significant role in storing tropical peat carbon.

Warming promotes loss of subsoil carbon through accelerated degradation of plant-derived organic matter

Nicholas O. E. Ofiti et al.

Summary: The study found that +4 degrees C whole-soil warming significantly impacted the quantity and quality of SOM, leading to divergent responses in different soil depths. The warming increased the accumulation of plant-derived n-alkanes in deep subsoils, but at the expense of plant- and microorganism-derived fatty acids, indicating accelerated microbial decomposition of plant-derived inputs with warming.

Conservation slows down emission increase from a tropical peatland in Indonesia

Chandra S. Deshmukh et al.

Summary: Measurements at two contrasting sites in a coastal peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia showed that greenhouse-gas emissions from intact peatland increased substantially due to extreme drought, with emissions at the degraded site being twice that of the intact site. Protecting intact tropical peatlands from degradation can offer important climate benefits, reducing greenhouse-gas emissions significantly.
