PICASO 3.0: A One-dimensional Climate Model for Giant Planets and Brown Dwarfs

Sagnick Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Upcoming observations from the James Webb Space Telescope will enable detailed study of exoplanet and brown dwarf atmospheres. To interpret these observations, accurate atmospheric models are needed, which have often relied on simplified assumptions and are not open-source. A new Python-based 1D atmospheric model has been developed, based on a widely used Fortran-based code, with the added capability of self-consistently treating disequilibrium chemistry. This model is applicable to hydrogen-dominated atmospheres such as brown dwarfs and giant planets.

A New Sedimentation Model for Greater Cloud Diversity in Giant Exoplanets and Brown Dwarfs

Caoimhe M. Rooney et al.

Summary: The presence and distribution of atmospheric condensates play a critical role in the observed atmospheric spectrum of exoplanets and brown dwarfs. The Ackerman and Marley methodology, implemented in the open-source software Virga, is widely used to study cloudy atmospheres. However, comparisons with more complex models have revealed inconsistencies. In this study, the researchers extended the original methodology to allow for non-constant values of the input parameter f (sed), leading to better agreement with complex models.

Summary: This study utilizes lab-measured data for injection-recovery tests to analyze the performance of the NIRSpec PRISM mode on JWST in observing exoplanets, identifying systematic noise sources that can be effectively detrended. The results show that the noise floor of the detector is consistent with expectations, which is promising for future observations of challenging targets with faint atmospheric signatures.

L. Alderson et al.

Summary: By analyzing and studying the observational data of WASP-17b, absorption due to H2O and CO2 was detected, and the orbital period was finely adjusted. The study shows that the data support a bimodal solution of high- or low-metallicity modes.

Summary: The exoplanet CoRoT-1 b exhibits interesting physical characteristics as a transitional planet. Through observations and analysis of its secondary eclipses, we have obtained some insights into its spectra and temperature-pressure profile. Although no distinct features have been found in the current observations, this study paves the way for future high-precision results using stare mode spectroscopy and highlights the model dependency of the inversion.

Summary: This study aims to trace the planetary migration scenario by comparing the chemical composition of planets and host stars, and discuss stellar properties and kinematic parameters in the context of planetary formation. The study found that the temperature, abundance, and elemental ratios of the host stars are consistent with the Galactic chemical evolution, and there is a correlation between planetary mass and metallicity, as well as abundance of volatile elements (e.g., oxygen) in low-mass planets.

On the Dayside Atmosphere of WASP-12b

Michael D. Himes et al.

Summary: The atmospheric structure of WASP-12b has long been debated, with discrepancies attributed to both model differences and subtle differences in input data. This study demonstrates that some of the differences are independent of models and driven by data inputs. The inclusion of additional species does not significantly affect the retrieved results. However, a proposed physically motivated model is not supported by current data resolution. This study raises concerns about the sensitivity of exoplanet retrievals to slight changes in input data.

P. Sarkis et al.

Summary: This study approaches the radius anomaly problem in hot Jupiters by inferring the internal luminosity distribution and studying its effects on the interior structure. The research finds that hot Jupiters tend to have high internal luminosity and suggests that different heating mechanisms can explain various aspects of the observations.

Abundance measurements of H2O and carbon-bearing species in the atmosphere of WASP-127b confirm its supersolar metallicity

Jessica J. Spake et al.

Summary: The study measured the transmission spectrum of exoplanet WASP-127b and found rich features of absorption and wavelength-dependent scattering. The abundances of Na, O, and C were found to be supersolar, as well as the volume mixing ratios of CO2. Water was detected with a significance of 13.7 sigma, while Na was detected at a lower abundance compared to previous ground-based detections, and no evidence of Li or K was found.

A unique hot Jupiter spectral sequence with evidence for compositional diversity

Megan Mansfield et al.

Summary: Hot Jupiters have distinct emergent spectra from self-luminous objects due to their unique heating mechanisms. While theoretical models predict a continuum of dayside spectra for these exoplanets, there is still scatter around the mean trend, likely influenced by variations in metallicity and elemental abundance ratios. This population study of near-infrared spectra of hot giant planets reveals a correlation between the strength of the 1.4 μm water band and temperature, regulated by irradiation levels and individual planetary formation pathways.

A New Window into Planet Formation and Migration: Refractory-to-Volatile Elemental Ratios in Ultra-hot Jupiters

Joshua D. Lothringer et al.

Summary: The study aims to use the current composition of exoplanets to understand their formation process, focusing on the measurement of refractory-to-volatile elemental abundance ratios and its implications for planet origins. By analyzing the refractory-to-volatile ratio, researchers can estimate a planet's atmospheric rock-to-ice fraction and constrain planet formation and migration scenarios. The paper discusses the potential for future research in measuring refractory-to-volatile ratios in ultra-hot Jupiters with the James Webb Space Telescope and combining observations at low and high resolution.
