Anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic agents from Xylaria sp. SWUF09-62 fungus

Summary: The ongoing search for anti-cancer agents from microorganisms led to the isolation of four new compounds and eleven known compounds from Xylaria sp. SWUF09-62 fungus. Among them, compounds 2 and 4 showed potential chemo-prevention and chemo-therapeutic properties, as well as anti-inflammatory effects and cytotoxicity against certain cancer cells.

Hybridorubrins A-D: Azaphilone Heterodimers from Stromata of Hypoxylon fragiforme and Insights into the Biosynthetic Machinery for Azaphilone Diversification

Summary: The study investigated the diversity of azaphilones in stromatal extracts of the fungus Hypoxylon fragiforme and linked them to their biosynthetic machineries through bioinformatics. It identified four unprecedented bis-azaphilones and a hybrid azaphilone with strong inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation. Genome analysis revealed two separate biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for azaphilone formation, representing the first example of distant cross-acting fungal BGCs collaborating to produce different families of azaphilones.

Summary: The study revealed potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer compounds in the fungus Biscogniauxia whalleyi SWUF13 085, including several undescribed compounds. Some of these compounds showed inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production in macrophage cells and anti-proliferative activity against HeLa cells, while others only exhibited inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production.

Straightforward Stereoselective Synthesis of Seven-Membered Oxa-Bridged Rings through In Situ Generated Cycloheptenol Derivatives

Summary: This paper presents a method for the stereoselective synthesis of seven-membered oxa-bridged rings using iodine-mediated in situ generated cycloheptenols. The reaction combines C-C sigma-bond cleavage and C-O bond-forming reactions in a one-pot fashion, starting from simple and easily accessible raw materials. The key to the reaction is the formation of carbon radicals initiated by I2.
