Impacts of Grazing by Small Ruminants on Hillslope Hydrological Processes: A Review of European Current Understanding

Gabriel Minea et al.

Summary: This review examined the impacts of grazing by small ruminants on hydrological processes in European pasture lands, finding a lack of evidence-based literature on the subject in Europe. Existing literature is mostly limited to the Mediterranean belt, the British Isles, and the Austrian Alps, while there are studies in Oceania-Pacific and the United States. Underestimation of the problem's significance, it being seen as an unattractive research direction, and a lack of research funding contribute to the limited research in Europe. Further research and funding are needed to address the knowledge gaps and limitations related to the impacts of grazing by small ruminants on hydrological processes in Europe.

Hybrid XGboost model with various Bayesian hyperparameter optimization algorithms for flood hazard susceptibility modeling

Saeid Janizadeh et al.

Summary: The study developed an optimal model for flood susceptibility mapping in the Kan watershed, Tehran, Iran using three Bayesian optimization hyper-parameter algorithms and evaluated model performance using ROC curves. The evaluation results showed that Bayesian hyperparameter optimization methods significantly increased the efficiency of the XGB model for predicting flood hazard.

Developing Robust Flood Susceptibility Model with Small Numbers of Parameters in Highly Fertile Regions of Northwest Bangladesh for Sustainable Flood and Agriculture Management

Showmitra Kumar Sarkar et al.

Summary: The present study aims to improve the robustness of a flood susceptibility (FS) model with a small number of parameters in data-scarce areas by employing machine learning-based sensitivity analysis and an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). By selecting relevant flood conditioning variables and using AHP technique, the FS model was produced. Sensitivity analyses were performed to find out the sensitive flood conditioning variables and enhance the model's performance. Rainfall, soil type, slope, and elevation were found to be the most sensitive factors, while curvature and drainage density were less sensitive. The new FS model yields higher AUCs and removing less relevant factors maintains or increases the predicted model's robustness.

Flow structures in asymmetric compound channels with emergent vegetation on divergent floodplain

Ali Samadi Rahim et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of vegetation on flow structures and turbulence parameters in floodplains. The presence of vegetation significantly reduces bed shear stresses and depth-averaged velocity, and the production and dissipation of turbulence are closely related to the presence of vegetation.

Susceptibility to Gully Erosion: Applying Random Forest (RF) and Frequency Ratio (FR) Approaches to a Small Catchment in Ethiopia

Selamawit Amare et al.

Summary: This study developed a gully erosion susceptibility map using frequency ratio and random forest algorithms, finding that groundwater table is one of the most important predictor factors in Ethiopia. Land cover for Nitisols and drainage density for Vertisols were identified as leading factors influencing gully locations. Other factors like texture and curvature were found to have little significance in gully formation.

Mapping the spatial and temporal variability of flood hazard affected by climate and land-use changes in the future

Saeid Janizadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated current and future flood risk in the Kalvan watershed in Iran. The results showed that changes in climate and land use will lead to an increase in moderate to high flood risk areas by 2050. The ensemble model had the highest predictive power, followed by GBM, XGB, and CIRF models.

Flood-prone area mapping using machine learning techniques: a case study of Quang Binh province, Vietnam

Chinh Luu et al.

Summary: This study developed a flooding susceptibility assessment tool for Quang Binh province in Vietnam using machine learning techniques and historical flood marks. The validation of various models showed good performance, with Naive Bayes tree achieving the highest accuracy of over 92%. The final flood susceptibility map categorized different areas based on flood risk, providing valuable information for flood risk reduction and management in Quang Binh province.
