Genome-Wide DNA Methylation in Policemen Working in Cities Differing by Major Sources of Air Pollution

Katerina Honkova et al.

Summary: DNA methylation, as an epigenetic mechanism, displays unique changes in different localities among city policemen, reflecting the impact of air pollution types on DNA methylation profiles. These differences may be associated with diseases (such as diabetes, respiratory diseases, etc.), the brain dopaminergic system, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effects of the air pollution dynamics on semen quality and sperm DNA methylation in men living in urban industrial agglomeration

Miluse Vozdova et al.

Summary: This study tested the impact of seasonal changes in air pollution on semen quality and sperm DNA methylation in men living in the industrial agglomeration of Ostrava, Czech Republic. The results showed that seasonal changes in air pollution levels did not have a substantial effect on sperm DNA methylation or semen quality.

Association between sperm mitochondrial DNA copy number and deletion rate and industrial air pollution dynamics

Miluse Vozdova et al.

Summary: The effects of air pollution on men's reproductive health were investigated in this study. The results showed that sperm mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) was closely associated with male fertility, while mtDNA deletion (mtDNAdel) rates might be a more sensitive biomarker of air pollution exposure in urban industrial environments.

Sperm mtDNA copy number, telomere length, and seminal spermatogenic cells in relation to ambient air pollution: Results of a cross-sectional study in Jing-Jin-Ji region of China

Lixiao Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to CO and PM may impair testicular and post-testicular semen quality, while changes in seminal spermatogenic cells, sperm telomere length, and sperm mitochondrial DNA copy number indicate the need for more attention to these mechanisms.

Oxidative Stress Is Associated with Telomere Interaction Impairment and Chromatin Condensation Defects in Spermatozoa of Infertile Males

Benoit Berby et al.

Summary: This study found that infertile males with conventional semen parameter alterations have higher levels of oxidative stress and chromatin condensation defects in sperm, with a positive correlation between the number of telomere signals and the percentage of spermatozoa with chromatin condensation defects.

Semen quality and sperm DNA integrity in city policemen exposed to polluted air in an urban industrial agglomeration

Jiri Rubes et al.

Summary: The study investigated sperm quality in city policemen in Ostrava during high and low levels of air pollution. It found that exposure to high air pollution increased sperm chromatin damage and immature sperm, correlating with decreased sperm vitality, normal morphology, and acrosome-intact sperm.

Mitochondrial DNA deletion mutations increase exponentially with age in human skeletal muscle

Allen Herbst et al.

Summary: This study developed a high-throughput method to quantify human mtDNA deletion frequency and validated it on subjects of different ages. The results showed an exponential increase in mtDNA deletion frequency with age, with the assay being accurate, sensitive, and suitable for healthy individuals and patients with suspected mitochondrial diseases.
