Differential Temporal Dynamics of Axial and Appendicular Ataxia in SCA3

Roderick P. P. W. M. Maas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal dynamics of SARA item scores in SCA3 patients and found differences in the progression patterns of axial and appendicular ataxia. Male patients showed a faster progression, and the omission of certain test items could lower sample size requirements for therapeutic trials.

Development of SARAhome, a New Video-Based Tool for the Assessment of Ataxia at Home

Marcus Grobe-Einsler et al.

Summary: The study developed a video-based tool called SARA(home) for measuring ataxia severity at home, which was highly correlated with the conventional SARA. The feasibility of independent home recordings was demonstrated, showing a considerable degree of intraindividual variability in SARA(home) scores.

Exploring the clinical meaningfulness of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia: A comparison of patient and physician perspectives at the item level

Roderick P. P. W. M. Maas et al.

Summary: The study found significant discrepancies between patients and physicians in the ratings of SARA items. On average, patients were overestimated by 3.1 ± 2.1 SARA points. Underestimation occurred less frequently, but was relatively common in stance and fast alternating hand movements. The majority of patients considered gait to be the most valuable SARA item, while the remaining 25% chose stance.
