Observing Intermediate-mass Black Holes and the Upper Stellar-mass gap with LIGO and Virgo

Ajit Kumar Mehta et al.

Summary: The study utilizes ground-based gravitational-wave detectors to probe the mass function of intermediate-mass black holes. Bayesian analysis is performed on IMBHBs with projected sensitivity of upcoming LIGO and Virgo observing run, revealing the precision of measuring source-frame parameters. High resolution of reaction rate and fine temporal resolution are necessary for resolving the peak of the BH mass spectrum.

The cosmic evolution of binary black holes in young, globular, and nuclear star clusters: rates, masses, spins, and mixing fractions

Michela Mapelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cosmic evolution of different populations of binary black holes (BBHs) using upgraded semi-analytical codes. The results show that the merger rate density of BBHs in globular clusters (GCs) and nuclear star clusters (NSCs) is not significantly affected by stellar metallicity, while the rate of isolated BBHs changes with metallicity. The behavior of BBHs in young star clusters (YSCs) is intermediate between isolated and GC/NSC BBHs. The local merger rate density of Nth-generation black holes is mostly influenced by the spin parameter. The primary black hole mass function evolves with redshift in GCs and NSCs but remains constant in YSCs and in the field.

Dynamical double black holes and their host cluster properties

Debatri Chattopadhyay et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between star cluster global properties and their double black hole populations. It concludes that cluster metallicity is crucial for determining lifespan, while initial half-mass radius dominates BII exchange interactions. The mass of interacting BHs, rather than interaction frequency, is key in thermal expansion and evaporation. Cluster initial density plays a critical role in determining the number of DBH mergers.

Stellar-mass black holes in young massive and open stellar clusters - IV. Updated stellar-evolutionary and black hole spin models and comparisons with the LIGO-Virgo O1/O2 merger-event data

Summary: This study conducted long-term, direct, relativistic many-body computations in model dense stellar clusters using up-to-date stellar-evolutionary, supernova, and remnant natal-kick models. The results showed that these models can produce dynamically paired black hole mergers that are in agreement with observations, while also suggesting that young massive clusters and moderately massive open clusters may produce detectable gravitational wave sources.

Intermediate mass black hole formation in compact young massive star clusters

Francesco Paolo Rizzuto et al.

The formation efficiency is higher in more compact clusters, and lower accretion fractions also contribute to IMBH formation.

Summary: This study investigates the mass gap in the black hole mass spectrum, considering uncertainties related to the carbon-oxygen reaction rate and collapse of hydrogen-rich envelope. Progenitors of low-mass binary black-hole mergers in the isolated binary evolution scenario

Federico Garcia et al.

Summary: Through extensive simulations, we found that the formation of the binary black holes depends strongly on the initial masses of the stars and the stellar winds. The common-envelope phase plays a critical role in the merging process, influencing the expected merger rates. A high-efficiency scenario with a specific value for the common-envelope efficiency parameter is favored based on comparing the predicted rates with observed data.

Simone S. Bavera et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of mass-transfer physics on observable properties of binary black hole populations and finds that low common envelope efficiency results in tighter orbits and more tidal spin-up. In the detectable population, all non-zero spin systems come from the common envelope channel, with a local rate density range of 17-113 Gpc(-3) yr(-1), while the stable mass transfer channel has a rate density of 25 Gpc(-3) yr(-1.

GW190521 formation via three-body encounters in young massive star clusters

Marco Dall'Amico et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation of GW190521-like systems through three-body encounters in young massive star clusters. The research suggests that the production of these binary black hole mergers is highly sensitive to the spin distribution of first-generation black holes. Stellar collisions, second-generation mergers, and dynamical exchanges are identified as key factors in producing similar systems within young star clusters.

Intermediate-mass black holes from stellar mergers in young star clusters
